Wanna take our laptop from 8GB of Ram to 16GB.

It takes 260 pin DDR4 SODIMM. Would like to keep the cost sub $100.

I done memory upgrades before, but it's been a long time. Translation: I'm not that familiar with current tech. I'm comfortable with the physical task, but want to make sure that I'm getting the most bang for my $$ with the memory module.

I'd also like to add a SATA M.2 Internal SSD to compliment the standard HDD. The machine has a 1 TB drive in it currently and I'm torn between putting in 512 MB or 1 TB SSD.

The biggest use of the laptop is running serato. Some of the song load a little slowly from the HDD and I get a little graphics lag at time if I'm doing things to quickly. My 9 y/o also has asperations of making movies for Utube. My music library roughly about 100 GB.

It's a lenovo ideapad L340-15IWL.

Thoughts?

Change HD first. I assume it will make a huge difference by itself.

Well, I'm not going to swap it totally, I'm just going to augment the existing drive with the new SSD. I'm going to try and move most everything except the operating system over to it. (trying to maximize storage space and too lazy to move the operating system over to a new drive. :))

But I would tend to agree.

The biggest thing you'd want on the SSD is the OS

And that will be a far superior upgrade over ram. You probably wont notice the ram upgrade

Unless you're actually running out of RAM, you'll see vastly more uplift by moving to an ssd.

Are you actually running out of RAM?

I agree with upgrading the SSD's will give you more bang for the buck.

I just looked up your PC and it appears to support MVME drives. It just happens Amazon has the Samsung 970 EVO at an good price. The 1tb is going for $139 and the 500gb is $69. Have had really good luck with these, great drives.

Good info on your upgrade.

This, and even if he were actually running out of RAM, he would still see a tremendous improvement by paging memory out to SSD anyway.

Go with the SSD first.

This was exactly what I was going to put in.

From what I've heard here, I think go with a 1TB drive and skip the memory upgrade right now.

I did once or twice trying to compile video using Sony Vegas. But I had a bunch of programs open when it was running.

If I upgrade to 2TB of drive space, I would always up the virtual memory on the machine.
