So I am switching jobs and realized I’ve been using my work laptop for everything and need to get a personal one. I have 2 monitors and a shitty usb dock.

Looking to get a gaming laptop, nothing too crazy, just basic steam games and some work.

What I want to be able to do is have a dock/usb hub that I can just swap between my work laptop and my personal laptop. Want something good enough to not make the graphics run slow. I’m not very technical and have no clue what to even look for. Any recs?

Any USB-C dock will do. I've used HP and Dell and they are fine.

Are both laptops windows? I ask because HP docking stations aren’t compatible with macs.

Many new monitors can essentially function as a dock if they support USB C power delivery.

Everyone is getting away from the true snap on docks now. We’ve had to go with thunderbolt docks on our last few orders. The users bitch bc they like the true docks, but we have had less problems with the thunderbolt docks vs the old style snap on ones.

The only ones I have experience with are the Dell docks, I've glanced at the HPs but have yet to be hands-on with them.

Either the Dell or HP docks will run you a couple hundred dollars, depending on the ports you want (we do dual Display). If you go with the Dell, get the WD19, the others are straight up trash. While some of the others still work, the vast majority of the other models we've purchased over the years failed in some way within the first two years. Also, due to chip shortages Dell hasn't included an external speaker port on their docks since just before COVID.

HP's site shows all but their lowest end docks as being out of stock (and this has been the norm for a while).

Dell docks are currently on back order for at least a month so your best option will likely be looking over Amazon (over looking at individual company sites), or even Ebay (bid at your own risk). When looking at a dock, be sure it has the video outputs which are compatible with your laptop, especially if you're doing dual monitors.

Most docks aren't going to have more than 4 USB slots.
