Face ID is the biggest plus. It's extremely intuitive and I rarely feel like I'm having to sit there waiting on it. I was surprised by how many apps I was able to use it in touchIDs place for app specific locks which is one thing I was worried would be a pain.

No more home button is much better than I imagined. Very smooth being able to open the phone with mostly just a quick swipe up as face ID is very quick. I really like how you can swipe across the bottom now to get back and forth between recent apps. Not sure if that's just a general iOS update but I like that.
The only downside I'm not thrilled with is the control center has been moved to a pull down instead of pull up because of the new "home button". That will take a little getting used to but really my only "complaint" so far.

I actually don't mind the cutout at the top. I think it's a nifty feature to keep a little more screen space that they utilize to get the time/battery out of your "normal screen" view.

All in all, I'm extremely happy with it. Very fast and really like all of the additions. They knocked it out of the park.

There is much better targets to go after than the notch. The notch is likely to be brought over to Android soon anyway.

I'd go after the clunky app switcher/close functions.

The horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen is more of a problem than the notch.

Wut? Switching between apps is one of the best features of this phone. You literally slide left/right at the bottom and you’re immediately in your previous app.

Closing apps is annoying though. I miss just being able to swipe up to close apps, as opposed to holding down before swiping up.

Not talking about the quick switch between apps you just had open. Getting to the full app switcher which you also use to close out apps is shite.

Disagree. Not hard at all to open the multitasker. In fact it’s easier for me than reaching down to double tap the home button.

Obviously that’s all preference, but I’m with you on closing out of apps.

Essential Phone, announced on May 30th, began shipping on August 25th. Sorry, Apple didn't invent the notch either.

They were the first out with a larger notch, though. Can't innovate anymore, my arse.

Then CAD making fun of it is pointless.

meh, both are a gimmick. One was made by the inventor of Android who was trying to launch a new company. It was done intentionally as a gimmick to help put his new company on the map.

Not sure why Apple thought they needed the gimmick. My guess is they thought it would distract people from not seeing the Home button.

I’ve had it since launch. I’m kinda “meh” on the phone. My wife has the 8+ and I think I kinda like it better.

The Face ID is ok, but not nearly as flawless as the fingerprint. Closing apps now is fricking stupid. I can’t really think of anything that I like about this phone over the 8+.

Eh, it was headed that way for awhile, but you have to have some real estate with current tech for camera/speaker/mini Kinect for FaceID.

I'm actually enjoying the smaller overall size phone a little better. I always liked the bigger screen on the + versions, but now that the X has basically the same size screen but smaller form factor, it's pretty nice.

FaceID has been pretty flawless for me.

Closing apps is a bit of a pain, but not sure why you'd need to do that regularly except maybe if an app crashes and you need to reset. That hasn't really bothered me much.

You'd think. It's pretty damn unnecessary, and they allow it to overlay text in apps like Safari, making the text look like it's struck out. The other thing I didn't like was allowing text at the bottom to be clipped by the rounded corners. That just looked wrong, wrong, wrong. To my surprise, the notch didn't bug me when I tried the phone at the store. I think I could get used to it.

I travel a lot and have the X in a holder on the dash. Using GPS is a pain. If I’m sitting at a red light and wanting to check the next turn or a stop or a text that just came through or whatever, I have to physically take the phone out of the holder, do the face thing and put it back. Oh, and when the sun is blaring in through your window.....it does not work. At all.

That probably pushes my bias, but I don’t think that Face ID has any distinct advantages over the thumbprint.

On closing apps, I’m disappointed that a company that used to pride itself in the user experience has turned it to shite in many ways. 3 steps to close an app is ridiculous when it used to take 2. It’s like they’re getting lazy and know that whatever hot garbage they put out is going to be gobbled up. And I’m about as big of an apple fan as there is. In use right now: 4 iphones, 4 ipads, and 2 MacBook pros. Don’t even get me started on how they’ve fricked up the user experience on those with the latest iteration.

And it’s super nitpicking, but I don’t like the curved screen at the bottom. I prefer the squared edges of the 8+ and before. It’s like they did it just to say they did it instead of doing it with a purpose.

It apparently already existed with the essential, the shrinking bezel game has been headed in that direction for awhile. We will see it on another flagship soon I bet. No headphone jack found it's way over, this one will as well.
