There was some discussion about college degrees here, but what about IT certifications via online colleges? would this be worth a shot, or is it better to go directly to vendor types? (Cisco, etc)
I know many places, including my company love to see the word "college" on a resume, but they also do value true technical expertise as well.

I have a buddy whose son didn't like college, but was interested in programming. He's doing a 12 week bootcamp, I think it's 5 days a week for 12 weeks, nothing but coding and and technique.
Friend says it's legit, and he expects to graduate and find a job as a junior developer and move up from there.
It's the future of college I'm thinking.

Those bootcamps are nice. I have taken a couple. The problem is, they are expensive as hell. With that said, it's exponentially less expensive than a 4yr degree. But they are all north of $1500 and I have seen some as much as $6k. So you have to pay up front. I recommend anyone to do self study. It's cheap, and there is so much information available on the web. Get that knowledge, and if you want to do boot camps great. I know the Louisiana Technical colleges use to do computer classes. And in some cases(mine back in early 2000's) offered Cisco courses. I don't think they do the cisco stuff anymore. Some do, and you can find them. Since SLCC took over the technical schools in acadiana area, they don't do anything more than the base Comp TIA stuff now. You have to pay New Horizons and places like that a boatload of money to take courses there.

Yup.
I went through a 5 semester Cisco academy at LTC in Opelousas (TH Harris) back in 07 - 08. I think I owe my entire career to that course. It got my foot in the door in a call center and in 4 years I was a net admin at am ISP.

From what I’m seeing here, sounds like some of the local technical colleges offer the Cisco type of certifications, but the bigger universities sort of have their own “brand” and not the industry known types.

The courses were no joke. In addition to the Cisco stuff, we had classes in A+, Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, Exchange, and Access. 33 started in semester 1, only 5 graduated at the end. Only 1 got their CCNA at the end of the course. Not me. I got mine later with some self study.

Interesting. This industry is a little foreign to me, but my son is pursuing a career in cybersecurity/intel.
He did 2 yrs at UL in comp science with 3.5 GPA then joined the Navy to supposedly get the very best of training in that field, and also finish his degree in the Navy, accredited through Purdue Univ.
He should have very good options when he is done, considering DoD security clearance, among other things.
ETA: taught himself JAVA in high school, pursued Offensive Security Certified Professional (ethical hacking) certification as a high schooler.
