Can you guys who know much more about this than I do offer some help with this? Initially, I started looking into things because my wifi connection is shite. I have AT&T as a provider, using their standard modem/router and an additional wireless access point. Then as I started messing around with speed test, I got interesting results.
1) work laptop (no VPN, wired connection to hub) 318.6 down, 129.6 up
2) personal pc (connected to the same hub as my work machine) 495.7 down, 159.3 up
3) phone (wifi) 124 down, 148 up

For the wifi solution, should I buy a better router and disable wifi on my ATT router, as I've seen mentioned on here before? What would cause such a difference in the numbers between my 2 hard-wired machines, though?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is not my area of expertise.

With your phone, it'll depend on how close you are to the router and if you are connected to 2.4 or 5.

I remember when I had ATT, I got a different router immediately because for whatever reason their gateway did not work well with apple products. My laptop, tv, and streaming devices had great speed but my iphone and ipad had non existent speed. Literally coulnd't bring up TD on them.

You can absolutely get better speed and range with a different router but if you are getting 124 down throughout the house I really wouldn't bother.

Yeah that's a great speed. Wifi is gonna be slower than hard wired due to interference from other networks, walls, distance from ap, etc.

Nothing to complain about here. Speeds are great.

Take a look at this Ars Technica article.

Kinda related question: I have my router set up with both frequencies, 5 and 2.4. I can connect to the 5 with my phone and TV but my laptop never ‘sees’ the 5 mghz frequency. I haven’t done a lot of troubleshooting to solve it, but any quick idea why that would be?

It connects to the 2.4 fine and it’s well within range to connect to the 5 mghz. It doesn’t see it even when 6 feet away.

Depending on its age, it's WiFi radio may not be 5ghz capable. Or, 5ghz may not be enabled in its settings. I'd bet the former is the case.

But if 2.4 works, why mess with it?

That the reason I haven't done much troubleshooting. I just wonder why more than anything.

How old is the laptop? 5 GHz has different "channel widths". To get the fastest speeds you need 80MHz or 160MHz channel width which is probably the default. Older devices may not support those. In my home network, I configured 5 GHz for 40MHz for compatibility and reliability. Higher widths are more susceptible to interference. Even with 40Mhz I still get 200+ Mbps which is plenty.
