I use the normal programs (cinema, etc) to watch shows. The past couple months they have been buffering like crazy, despite a very fast internet. Would a VPN help mitigate this problem?

TIA

No. A VPN will be slower than your current “direct” connection to the internet.

It's possible your ISP is throttling your connection if they see you are streaming from Cinema or other illegal servers. If so, then a vpn may help.
