Is there any reason to not get on a pre-paid cell plan now?

Seems like those are straight forward, compared to the stuff on post paid plans.
My current cell is dying and need to get a new one. It just seems easier to buy the phone outright and just use a pre-paid plan. Checking my usage of data, I can get the same from Straight talk for $40/month cheaper than AT$T. AT&T does not even see to offer a similar enough plan.
Am I missing something on pre vs post paid plans, besides the benefit of paying off the phone through installments at 0%?

Major carriers are for families and people who want/need to have the latest phone every year.
MVNOs are for single lines and people who keep their phone for 2 years or more.

Guess that is me. The wife's phone is covered by her company and the kids have hand-me down phones.

Maybe I'm dumb but I don't really get the distinction anymore

It is very blurred. Even the pre-paid have multi-phone sharing plans.

Does it have to be at&t? Would you consider something like mint mobile ($15/month unlimited talk/text) which is on Tmobile network?

Its a no brainer once you look into it.
I was paying ~$95 per month with AT&T. That was x2 lines with 9gb of data per month.
I switched to Total Wireless and now pay $65 per month for 25gb of data for 2 lines.
TW uses verizon towers and I actually get better service than when I was with ATT. I was worried about switching/porting my numbers, but it was a very easy process.
Also, regarding family plans, they have a 4 line deal for 95$ and that includes 100gb of data!!!
One negative is you can't tether your phone for WIFI, but that wasn't a big concern for me.

You're correct.
I ditch AT&T after getting ripped off with escalating costs, same thing happened with Verizon.
Now I'm with Cricket, which uses the AT&T network, and I pay $55 a month for unlimited data.
I also have a Samsung Galaxy tab6 connected through Cricket and pay $30 a month for it's data plan.
Just setup a card for monthly payment and you never have to be hassled with calling to pay for data or deal with BS escalating prices.

After 20 years paying Sprint I switched to Mint Mobile I pay six months in advance for what was close to a month. Love it.

See, I don't get all this penny pinching - I pay about $265 (all in) for 5 lines, unlimited on Verizon's network.

Check out Visible. They are owned by Verizon and offer cheap unlimited.

Not sure how much data you use, but you could save significantly with TW.... >100$ per month

I’m on total wireless which is Verizon. It’s $52 for 2 lines (30gb data). When I had Verizon I was laying about $25 in just taxes and surcharges

When they add new features to the network usually the prepaid cell plans don't always get the features for a while. For example HD Audio took a while, though I think the prepaid plans all have it now.
Pretty sure you can't add Apple Watch on a prepaid plan

The catch is that you are lower priority traffic when the network is congested. I have straight talk which runs on Verizon and during rush hour my Spotify won't stream sometimes due to congestion.

I went from Verizon to Google Fi to Total Wireless, and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. The issue with Total will be international travel but that isn't happening lately anyway. I'll either go back to Google Fi (great internationally, not so good in my area) for that or get a Sim card at my destination.

That’s never happened to me once in 3 years

Been with Cricket for a couple years now. $50 a month and no complaints.....

You're fortunate then or maybe my area is just unfortunate. That's definitely how they do it though. Postpaid plans get priority over everyone else.
