Even Apple understands that the $1000 phone experiment wasnt very successful. The updated iPhone X will be around 899.

Am I wrong in thinking the Note 8 is a $949 phone and that there's not a significant difference between $949 and $1000?

I'd rather pay $100 less and not have that feature, regardless of the manufacturer. How is it possibly an improvement

If I had an iPhone X there would be tape over the face ID. Why the frick would I want Someone to have a digital mapping of my face?

I’ll type my 4 digit password and save myself some privacy.

I'll upgrade from the 8+ to whatever comes out this fall. Is FaceID pretty flawless?

IMO touch id on Apple is inferior to what I had on the Nexus/Pixel, but it's fine. I still don't think I appreciate what I'm supposed to value with FaceID, but people seem to like it.

Fingerprint scanner on the back of the pixel is the best.
Agreed. You can pull it out of your front pocket, unlocking it at the same time. That thumb shite on iphones is stupid.

This is the biggest thing I miss since I switched to an iPhone. The fingerprint scanner in the button works most of the time but I very much preferred the one on the back of my Nexus phone

I can open my phone with a single swipe up, I love it
would rather have something more practical like a finger print sensor under the screen.

You have to stare at your phone before using apple wallet. With FP sensor, you just tap the NFC terminal with your finger already on the sensor and you're done.

It's not just for unlock. They are adding you to the database.

Hard to believe just fifteen years ago, this was science fiction in Minority Report.

Get a Nokia 3310 or something running Sailfish.

When FaceId works its great, when it doesn’t it sucks and always when it’s harder to type in the pin afterwards like when driving.

I’d rather have TouchID back.

This is what I'm looking for, anyone else want to chime in?

I'm guessing it's not too big of a swing either way. While I liked the Nexus/Pixel fingerprint on the back better than Apple's, it's not like Apple's is considerably worse. It's just slightly less reliable. Hoping the face id is similar (or better)

Tech gap for FaceID?

My Samsung Note 8 has it. And the Samsung S9 has it, along with I'm pretty sure a load of other phones.

I enable both fingerprint and face ID. Usually finger print is easiest on the back of the phone because my finger is pretty much already there when I pick it up.

But if that doesn't work I have face ID and it'll open when I look at it.

Why is it that Apple users always think Apple invented something that's been around for a while?

I tried to limit myself to the comment at the top of the page and prevent a pissing war, but the premise of the article is silly.

"Android phones don't want to use the FaceID technology"
Forgot to mention that there are other less expensive and fairly good face-unlocking systems currently out there and being used.

The comment about how Android phones just can't be priced like an Apple phone is also stupid, at best.

And then there's the "the Android fingerprint sensor that they're trying to create is so great."
The one Apple uses isn't bad. It's just not under the screen. Nor are any Android ones at present.

The article is just bad and drawing lines between non-vastly different things and looking at them under a microscope to make them look much much farther apart than they are.

Basically phones are both expensive and good.

Tech gap for FaceID?

Obviously the problem is my OP is poorly set up since only one poster in this thread seemed to understand the direction I was going. And for that I apologize to the board, but

This thread is NOT intended to be about authentication via facial recognition.

The technology that Apple uses to implement FaceID is not the same as previous attempts at facial recognition on phones. If it were then there wouldn't be an article about Android manufacturers not wanting to pay to add the FaceID tech. It uses 3D scanning technology which is why you get things like Animojis and improved SnapChat filters. What Apple is using for FaceID is basically Augmented Reality technology.

So let me try this again.

Is the camera tech behind FaceID basically a soft launch of AR camera technology giving Apple a head start of at least a year when they put the camera tech on the back of the phone as well?

If that is the case AND low end Android makers are already passing on adding this more expensive tech to their phones, will AR be a distinguishing feature between the iPhone/Pixel/Galaxy and the rest of the cheaper android phones?

I'm fully aware that Apple's business model is to lead from behind. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Google had an AR phone project called Tango, and I believe one of the Android manufacturers might have made an unsuccessful attempt at selling it. This is exactly the kind of market that Apple is good at creating. One where the ground is already covered a little and all Apple has to do is bring in the right partners/developers and simplify/streamline the tech enough so it's an easy sell to it's built in customer base, a key ingredient not many other companies have.

Switched from s8+ to iPhone X and have to say the Face ID is much faster and flexible than the iris scanner. Facial recognition on Samsung is 2d and can be duped with a picture. Tried it on the iPhone and it didn’t work. Plus my recorded face didn’t have sunglasses or hat on and it still works with them on. Facial recognition between the two platforms is no contest but the fingerprint scanner vs Face ID argument could be made.

For clarification I’ve had a Samsung phone since s3 and am still a fan just wanted to try something different.

ETA, I hate the stupid notch in the screen

Couldnt read all of it. Anyone find any holes in that policy that has them collecting facial data? How about fingerprint?

Not just apple but andriod/google too? Google doesn't do anything they cant collect personal data from.

Unfortunately the latest rumor I saw on this is that the new phones this year won’t have the 3D sensor on the back.

I am really looking forward to this happening. One of the uses I envision for it is as a 3D scanner. My company reverse engineers industrial parts and it costs us between $100-$1000 for each reverse engineered drawing and it takes days of work in many cases. I’m not sure how accurate the faceID sensor is, but I would need it to be accurate to .001”. Having an app that could spit out a manufacture quality drawing after a 5 minute scan would be extremely valuable.
