Is an older Dell desktop worth putting a new motherboard in?

I have a 2006 Dell Dimension E510 that I mothballed two years ago because it wouldn't run . I know of a disadvantaged kid that I want to help out with a computer to play game, education programs etc.

I pulled it put of the closet and it will only boot to a basic screen that says some about "Bios". I removed the case and the motherboard has quite a few bulging capacitors. Replacing them is too technical for me but I see that a motherboard can be had for about 50 bucks.

Is this computer even worth the hassle?? It was pretty decent back in the day.

Any idea what the specs are? Because Google is only turning up results for a 2005 Dimension E510, with these specs:

If these specs are accurate, this computer is not worth salvaging.

It's not just the motherboard. It's everything. Junk it.

Might keep the case to make a gaming PC?

The problem is, by the time you buy the motherboard and pay someone $50-100 to install it (since you said you can't do it yourself), you may have spent as much as an equivalent performing computer would cost new.

For example, this right here:

Is $150 and would perform better than the Dell.

How disadvantaged of a family are we talking about? Because the kid would probably enjoy a used iPod Touch more than a standard PC, and you can get a used 5th gen for $150 or a 4th gen for under $100. Look at the used tablet market, too. It's even better. For sure you could get something pretty decent for as much as you'd pay to get that Dell to keep trudging along.

well, he said he couldn't do the bulging capacitors

but can do the MB

I'd give it a shot.....for $50.00

Dell putts the motherboard on the wrong side of the case. Then does other dumb stuff to keep you from upgrading. Trash it and save yourself some grief.

Make sure it's not a BTX case. My brother had an old Dell and tried to upgrade the video card, but it was a tight fit and kept overheating. Nobody makes motherboards that fit those cases, or vice versa.

We have a ton of old math, reading and other games on CD my wife wants to donate to the chase in order to help this family out . They also have 2 kids under 6 so we could get a few years out of this.

I can change the motherboard..if I can get one for cheap.

I'm not computer expert by any means but if you have that much wrong with the mobo, chances are there is something wrong with other components as well.

Also, if you are going to listen to anyone, I would listen to ILikeLSUToo....he knows his shite.

It's an HDMI device, not USB. And it's the Intel Compute Stick. Released in April.

Do you have a monitor to go with it?

Regardless, you might be better off buying a 4-5 year old laptop on ebay, and getting a fresh battery for it. Hell, maybe even a Chromebook for $100 or less. Those old CDs won't work with the Chromebook, but there is lots of free kid stuff online.

This computer was made during the "capacitor plague", so odds are the power supply isn't in great shape, either.

Cool, whatever you can find that's already working would be best. I would just strongly advise against putting any money towards restoring a 10-year-old computer. It's really an eternity in computer years, not to mention Windows XP is completely end-of-life. No more updates, including security-related updates. I'll bet most or all of the software you have on CD can be found online, or else there's a website, desktop program, or mobile/tablet app that's just as good or better.

it's a longshot, but.....

XP is fine, so, no updates...I don't care [ I don't like 8 [[ spyware and hate layout ]] it may play 7
but then again, it may not.

best wishes either way....
