Anyone have a recommendation on a cheap or free software to get the wife’s photos off her iPhone and on to my laptop (non apple)?

Just plug it in with a lightning to USB cable?

Yeah I tried that but several of the larger folders won’t download not sure why. They time out or get errors. I was hopefully that there was some program that could get them off the phone.

login to icloud, go to photos and then download the file(s) you want to your computer.

You may have to transfer in smaller batches. I’m not sure if the iPhone connection refreshes or causes some issues, but large groups with long transfer times can create errors.

I use a free app called Wifi Photo Transfer move my phone pics to a PC. Does it in batches of 200 and doesn't take too much time at all. Just load the app and put the IPaddress in your browser while using same wifi. It transfers the pics in a zip file.

Correct. The iPhone will have an error if you try snd move more than a few hundred megabytes at a time. I was actually moving around 100 gigs of video data off my iPad Pro today, and even with a $40 thunderbolt usb-c cable, I would get an error if I tried to move more than a few gigs at a time
