Granddaughter, (absolutely no pics) wants an iPad Air. It’s her present for a great school year. She is 10, likes to read, draw and play games. Also she likes to record but not publish TikTok videos.

No clue about Apple products so looking for recommendations. Prefer Amazon and I am poor. Not sure if any other info would be helpful.

Thanks

My advise: consult her parents and write a check for what you can afford.
Let them make the purchase on your behalf; that way if there are any issues they can manage it. I would recommend that they price compare with their local Best Buy if there's one in the area.

Look at Sam's Club and Costco (blech) for sales. She probably doesn't know the actual difference between an iPad Air and an iPad. If she likes to read, get her a Kindle. Reading is not what iPads are designed for, either through their screens or through the ability to kill your attention span by getting a TikTok notification.

Maybe get her a Kindle for reading and give her parents $50-100 for the attention stealer of her choice. If you're poor, you're most likely going to be sorely disappointed what the iPad gets used for (probably most likely ignoring adults and anything around them.) A brand new Kindle Paperwhite will be $150, and she can pick out her own $10 case. If she really likes to read, she'll use it. If she's using it as an excuse to get what she wants from Grandpa, she won't, but at least her parents will be able to use it for years to come.

You can also go used on a iPad a few generations old, (not too old, otherwise it won't get iOS updates) and you can get one for $100. It may have the "inconvenience" of a Lightning charging port and a button on the front instead of on the top, but Roblox isn't going to care.

Thanks for the replies. Wife and I practically are raising her. Her parents are divorced and she is with us every other weekend minimum. Spends a lot more time with us during the summer

No doubt she will use it for Roblox and TikTok but she is really a mature kids and probably also wants one because it is cool.

What is the difference between an ipad and iPad Air?

Kids that age should not be on social media, especially Tik Tok.

She is not really on TikTok. Her and her friend just record dance videos. No posting and she does not watch other tiktok videos.

iPad vs. iPad Air (from Google AI)

The primary differences between the iPad Air and the standard iPad lie in performance, display, and features. The iPad Air generally offers a more powerful processor, a better display with better color accuracy and anti-reflective coating, and support for the second-generation Apple Penci

She's 10? Get the cheapest iPad you can find. A 10 year old does not need any of the performance improvements that will come with a nicer model. At least that's my opinion. What are you looking to spend if you don't mind me asking?

I would get an iPad and not an Air. Not sure a 10 year old needs the extra performance, and it's 200 dollars more.

iPad mini is excessively expensive compared to a regular one for this use case.
