Installing a new outlet on my patio

What else will I need?
I’ve got Romex 12/2 wire, a 20amp single pole breaker, a gfci outlet and a breaker box.
I want to run it from the panel inside and through the attic, then down onto the patio wall.

Does your 12/2 Romex have a ground wire?

Ya know, I’m not 100% sure.
I’ll have to check

Yes
It has a bare ground wire also.

What’s the plan for the last segment? From the attic to the box? Are you running the Romex inside the wall and cutting into the exterior wall surface to mount the box and outlet?

You’re running a whole new circuit for this? There’s not another outlet or light you could use to power this?
If you’re keeping everything enclosed in the walls or attic, and just punching through the wall, the Romex is fine. If it will be exposed, you’ll need to protect it with EMT or MC.
You’ll need a receptacle box. Either to cut into the wall, old work, or a surface mount (metal or weatherproof). If you use metal be sure to tie the box to the ground wire in addition to the receptacle.

Yes, from the panel in the utility room which is on the back of the house, into the roof and then I’ll put the outlet on the back wall of the house outside where the patio is.

What kind of wall?
You'll need some sort of weatherproof cover(Taymac) as well.

Just another thought- I installed an outlet for my TV on the Patio in the soffit. It was easier to install there than on a brick wall. My TV is also ceiling mounted right next to the outlet. It’s just the way it worked best for my setup logistically. Just something to think about.

Yes, just inside the house on the inside of the wall. I thought about tying into that one but it already has 2 romex lines running into it.
Can I still tie into this outlet?

What to you plan on using in this receptacle? General use or other?

Outdoor tv
Nothing is plugged into on the inside of the house

Well I doubt that unless the inside receptacle is dedicated. But a TV should be fine.
If your home isn't very old you might have 14/2 in the receptacle, if so you're fine with a feed from the indoor source. If it's 12 it'll just be tight. Depending on the box capacity it "might" be non code, but that's on you if you can make it fit. Good luck.

Yes, it is 14/2 in the receptacle. I saw it on the wiring earlier.
I'm going to return the opened 12/2 roll tomorrow and buy the 14/2 that need.

Buy the shortest roll you can!

Look at the by the foot section. Sometimes they have short lengths ready to go.
Posted on 8/24/18 at 8:28 pm to QuietTiger
15’ is the shortest they offer.
I need about 3’ maybe

Yes, one wire is power going into the receptacle and the other is going on to another one.
You should be fine tying into that one.

I would run the 12/2 as you never know what you might want to connect to it. I don't run 14/2 to anything. I've Re wired several rental properties that have 15 Amp circuits but I still run 12/2.
