you only get to avoid sales tax if there isn't a physical Apple Store in your state which I think is probably impossible now

No to both. You used to be able to buy devices from Google and have them shipped to LA tax free but you can't do that anymore.

Even if you avoid sales tax on the initial sale. You have to claim it on your taxes.
