I keep seeing ads for hair restoration devices using Red and Near IR LEDs for $1000-$3000

..so, I’m building one myself. It’s called the Hair Grower 2000 with 75 LASERS! Actually it’s just 41 660nm Red LEDs and 34 940nm Near IR LEDs in a somewhat symmetrical pattern that will cover the entire top of the head.

Parts will run about $20-$30 bucks. The difficult part is soldering the 75 LEDs. The design will be 5 LEDs in series (per column) with 15 columns in parallel. Forward voltage of the LEDs is ~2V.

Waiting on a 3D printing of the LED layout with preset locations for all 75. This should be done today.

I have various power supplies and will be testing out the design: 12VDC at either 1A, 1.5A, 2A or 3A. Higher output means deeper wavelength penetration, but don’t want to go too high or it could damage the LEDs or the circuitry (or give me superior intellect). I should be done with it this week.

If you haven’t kept up, I designed some LED therapy devices to help with joint pain and inflammation that have worked extremely well in reducing my L-knee tendonosis. Battled it for 4 years and I’m nearly pain free after using it for a few months. This design will just be a continuation of that design since hair loss can be attributed to hair follicle inflammation.

If it works, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll have a slightly warm scalp with $30 less in my pocket.

Bookmarked so I can check in later. I like these oddball projects.

Next I think you should do the opposite and build a hair removal device for certain body parts.

I already have the connection plan sketched of the LEDs in their groupings of 5 and how they will be connected.

11 will be 3 Red and 2 IR in series
4 will be 2 Red and 3 IR in series

They already have hair laser removal. I'd have to look at the wavelength used and at what power output to see if it's doable.

Could you hook a brother up. I got these pesky ear hairs that I have to keep plucking and come to think of it, I could use a little hair at the top of my head.

How about you make a football helmet device with the red and near ir on the top and the wavelength for hair removal on the earholes.

Yep that would work.

Why didn't Brees get one of these for his helmet?

I'm not a doctor but I don't see how that will help unless you have small but active hair follicles instead of just regular male pattern baldness.

I have psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and I'm pretty much bald. It is my observation that these symptoms I have are due to something that is happening at a deeper level, so if baldness is due to inflammation then it should be resolved with Humira, Cosentyx, etc which it is not.

I dunno - just spitballing here.

edit: these things might be at least somewhat effective, apparently. I could never bring myself to try rogaine and especially not propecia which makes you grow boobs. Maybe I should get one of these laser hats. There's basically no negative side-effects.

A friend started eating Paleo and noticed new hair growth. Carbs have been linked to inflammation and the reduction of carbs increased some hair growth.

I still have hair growth overall, but just thinning. I’ll give it 3 months of usage every other day for 10-15 min per session. Took some before pics recently so I have a baseline.

It works baw. I sold FDA approved lasers in the medical space for a few years. I'm genuinely interested in what you come up with. I've also healed pain with lasers and miss my demo units every day. One of the lasers I sold was 940nm and a off label use was hair loss. I had customers claiming it worked wonders for them.

Are you trying to make a pulsed or continuous power laser?

Pulsed at 50hz. The one I linked below that I made for pain & inflammation has 8 660nm red and 7 940nm near IR.

You can’t see the pulsing with the naked eye, but the camera on the iPhones can pick it up.

Ran a bench test with 25 LEDs on a 12V 3A source: 15 660nm and 10 940nm LEDs and it didn’t flame out.

Tough to get reliable power levels off the device. I have an old tektornix oscope I can use.

I'm going to be toying with adding a TIP31 transistor to the LM555 output to boost output current. I think I can bump it up to 1A and get the LED power output maxxed out around 150mW per.

I finished it on Sunday night.

I already had a pulsing circuit built on a breadboard so I’m just pairing it with the LED array for now.. The 9V 1A supply seems to generate enough output to drive the LEDs. I tried the 9V .5A first but it was a little weak. I’ll try the 9V 3A source just to check the output difference soon.

The array is designed in a rubber base similar to an oblong spheroid shape. For now, I just place the array directly on top of my head and set a timer for 10 min. I’m running it AM and PM every day. I’ll take the assembly and slowly move it around a few times through my hair as well.

I snapped some before pics and I’ll snap some more every 30 days for at least a months.

The Hair Grower 2000 in action.

I put it aside and didn't use it for a while, but I'm back to messing with it over the next few months. I had my circuitry messed up before and it wasn't pulsing, but now it is fixed. The pulse is actually 50hz but the camera can pick it up much better than the naked eye.

I’d like to try it.I was wanting one of your knee devices but we could never connect.
My knee actually quit hurting.
I’m not nearly bald but my hair is getting little thin on top.
