The laptop is about 4 years old and the charging port is apparently worn out and the charge cable can't always connect to charge the battery.
Looked at a youtube video on how to change out the port but looks like a major event.
Is there any other way to charge the laptop like thru the lightening outlet? I looked and can't seem to see a definitive answer one way or the other...

Link the exact model/sku of your laptop so we can take a look.

Assuming I'm looking at a picture of your laptop, you might be able to charge through the USB-C port (the little trident with the small lightning bolt) and you can probably charge through the Thunderbolt port (the large lightning bolt). Neither cable is particularly expensive, so just give it a shot.

Thanks so much, I'll try that.

Are you sure it's the laptop and not the charging cable? Many laptops have a 3rd wire in the charging brink that communicates between the laptop and the charger. That 3rd wire can go bad and keep the laptop from charging.

Could also be that. Though, with that said, I don’t even use the power cable on my laptop. Much rather just have a USBC cable and a wall adapter as a catch all. Though OP, reminder that you’ll need a wall adapter. And further, keep in mind the wattage of the wall adapter. If you’re just using the one that came with your phone, it’s probably very low wattage. It will work, but it will be slow. I have a handful of these spread out between various bags: LINK

Not the highest wattage, but a nice balance between size and power capacity.

Eta: In case it wasn’t clear, that’s for USBC. Look for something Thunderbolt specific if you’re going that route.

Either will work. You need a charger that supports 20 volt PD.
USBC is a mess but most wall chargers over 40w will “probably” support 20v.
Car PD chargers almost never support 20v PD even if they’re 60 watt+.

I have that exact laptop (it's awesome) and both of those ports charge the battery using the USB-C charging cable. The ports are interchangeable -- at least they are on mine.

Most modern laptops have USBC PD. I use a hub at home that charges and connects my two external displays and peripherals all with one cable. If you buy a cable, make sure it is PD compatible.
