Need some help here. Anyone know how I can connect my laptop to the same subnet of my local network? The router is connected to my desktop and is not wireless. I'm having some connection issues with a program I'm using and think this may be the problem. Thanks.

A little more information would be helpful. How is your laptop connected now? Wirelessly to the desktop or something?

My desktop is downstairs with the router and modem set up to it directly. I use my laptop all throughout the house by connecting wirelessly. I would like to use a program on my laptop but it seems I am not connected to the same "subnet" as the router/desktop computer which is causing connection issues. I was just wondering if there is a way to change my laptop or router settings to assure they are sharing the exact same connection.

Can this be achieved by using a static IP address instead of getting it dynamically?

open 'network and sharing center' control panel.

click 'change adapter settings and look for your wireless adapter (its the one that shows your router name in it and should be active with green bars, not a red X)

right-click and go to properites

under 'networking' tab look for 'internet protocol version 4' and double-click.

now, do you see "obatin IP automatically" or is "use the following ip address" checked?

i can help you further once you're at this point.

ok good. next, what type of router is it? you should go find the 'connected devices' control panel and check to make sure there's no IP address conflict.

do you have any other wireless devices hooked up? chromecast? roku? wdtv? xbox? etc.

connecting wirelessly to what? You said the router is not a wireless router. Are you connecting to the desktop via internet sharing or something??

Have you actually checked the IP addresses assigned to each device to verify that they aren't already in the same subnet? If they are connected to the same routers (one wired, one wireless), I'd expect them to be given IP address in the same subnet.

You'll want to actually verify the IP address because your issues could be something unrelated.

This...Sounds like either:

(1) a router is feeding another router, creating two LANs

(2) OP is on his neighbors wi-fi and wants to connect to his desktop

The confusing part is what your laptop and desktop being on two different subnets has to do with a program not working..

Is the program media center..?

It's a Netgear router. I have my laptop, phone, and ROKU all connected to this network, but under "attached devices" it's only showing my desktop computer (shows the IP and MAC address). So are they all not on the same network?

The router is wireless. It's connected directly to my desktop though.

My laptop is connected to MY router but I'm just trying to make sure that they are on the exact same network if that makes sense. When I pull up my router settings my laptop doesnt show up leading me to beleive they aren't on the same "subnet" or whatever

emphasis on 'attached'. you need to look under your wireless UI for everything connected via IP.

eta it will look something like this (Depending on linksys model)

Go into your router configuration and post the subnet mask that you see there.

O gotcha. Yeah only my Iphone is showing up. Shouldn't my laptop and ROKU be there?
