HP was a hard habit to break. They were bullet proof in their prime.

My 10 year old HP4015 laser has printed over 20K pages, 17K have been duplex, and still kicking arse. Thats the factory toner and one replacement. Printer says another 500 pages before it needs replacing again.

Sadly, the HP MFP-M283 AIO Laser color printer sitting next to it 99.99% is just used as a scanner/copier.

Kork I hear you. Your OP I could have written myself almost word-for-word.

My printer is the HP OfficeJet 5258. I went with the HP ink subscription service for 2.99 per month via a recurring credit card charge, based on the low number of pages I actually print per month. There are several tiers of pricing to choose from.

As you have learned, HP wants to charge you by the number of pages you print.

HP monitors your ink levels through your internet-connected printer, and they mail you new cartridges before you run out.

Used to be, I'd wait until I had a bad looking print job before making a trip to Office Depot to buy new ink cartridges. As a member of Office depot's rewards program, I/you get coupons in the mail for 10% off this and 20% off that -- but they ALL EXCLUDE the purchase of HP ink.

So I wind up spending well over $50-60 per year on ink in their store.

At 2.99 per month, I spend $36 per year and I never run out of ink.....and it's delivered to my door.

I don't feel like I'm being taken to the cleaners anymore on ink. Your mileage my vary. Thanks for this thread.

I briefly looked at going to laser.

Then I saw the replacement cartridges were $100 each for all 4 colors and got sticker shock. It made my $60+ ink cartridges look like a bargain.

But then again, I know nothing about the longevity of laser printers. Maybe it's cost effective for some.

I just threw out my Brother multifunction color laser. Color print quality was pretty bad and it was having some issues in the network department. The four toner replacement cartridges are very expensive and the third party toners I bought didn't work very well.

I bought an Epson ink jet from Costco for 350 (of course). So far I'm impressed. The ink tank is a game changer and it had some cool scanning options (scan to email, Google drive, Dropbox, etc). We don't print much so the old ink cartridge method was way too pricey. Oh, and HP sucks

I quit buying HP stuff and have and Epson multi-function printer with larger cartridge capacity than HP.
I had an HP camera that failed less than 2 months after warranty and they would not replace it even with a refurb, so now I skip anything related to HP.

Had to recently replace a power supply in an old HP PC... you got it... proprietary connectors.

Unless you need color, get a cheap laser printer

This is the route I took. If I need a color print, the UPS store 2 blocks away can print for me. I end up spending about $1 every year on color prints.
