Need one to store some media that I have. Are they all basically the same? I see big differences in prices. What about recertified?
Looking in the 500gb range.

If you want the drive to last a while might go with 1TB or larger as they are not expensive.
Look for the latest USB generation like 3.2. the speed difference for anything gen 3.0 or higher probably isn't great but if it doesn't cost more might as well get the latest spec.

i've been paying a bit over $100 (when on sale) for WD 14 and 16TB drives.
its been a couple years though so the prices may have fluctuated either up or down.
for that price get a big 'un.

I would do the SSD route, bonding parts. You can get spinning drives of much greater capacity for the same price, but size and damage proofneas are a factor.
And is there a reason you’re not cloning current drive onto a much larger one to clear the need for external storage at all?

Best Buy had a display yesterday with multiple SSD drives of 1 and 2 TB for under $100.
