Home surveillance systems... anyone here have one?

I use a Synology NAS with some IP cameras (mostly d-link). I went with this setup b/c I already had the Synology, and I just needed to buy some licenses for the cameras. I have a couple PoE cameras and a couple wireless cameras that just needed a power source.
I'm just curious what the tech board users have setup at their homes. I'm always looking for improvements/ideas.

FYI, my in-law's neighbors were robbed the night before last and on of the other neighbors caught the guys on his surveillance system. However, they were wearing LED headlamps and their face/head just looked like a ball of light.

I play with these things all day for work but I don't have one on my place.

Have you seen Dropcam?
Yes, I looked into them. My d-link cams have the same functionality minus the cloud recording. Having my recordings in the cloud isn't very appealing. Not to mention the indoor dlink cams are much cheaper than dropcam and the outdoor cams are only a few bucks more. They also have sd card slots to record locally and can be viewed via the cloud if I choose. The biggest difference for me was that the d-link cameras were compatible with my synology, dropcam weren't. I use synology for my recordings and the device is pretty well hidden in my house.

Unless you spend a good bit of money on some high-end cameras, faces are always hard to recognize on surveillance video at night anyway. My best camera faces the driveway & street so it logs all the vehicles passing thru. You have a better chance of finding someone if you have their license plate than if you have their face.

post the video then. i still call BS. they wore headlamps and were able to walk around and face the camera(s) at ALL times? LOL. I've never met a burglar that was that devoted

These same burglars didn't get 2 miles before there was a blow out so they ditched that truck and stole another one before one of the idiots did this. Looks like he was kinda devoted to me.
I'll talk to the old man about getting a copy of the video but if you know where a camera is it isn't that hard.

Gonna come back in here and check when I get a chance, but looking for recommendations on a cheaper setup. Maybe 2-3 cameras.

I am looking at some of the ICrealtime setups for my house. NVR 708N and some of the 2mp PoE cameras. New to this stuff...its what my installers like to use. ONe day i'll have the whole automation system so this one will integrate.

Just my opinion but while a surveillance system is really nice, if you don't have a security system installed then there's a good chance you'll just have the cameras stolen with the rest of the stuff.

Very good point but a CCTV system can be used for more than just robberies.

I've got a synology and have been looking for something to work with this. Any reccomendations on a decent IP camera? Something that works well in low light/night vision and PoE is probably preferable.

I have the 1080p QSee (yes I know) and it's already worked....twice 4 cams, night vision, 100ft balun (or whatever they call it).
Caught two crooks already and both are in jail so I'm happy. And I live in a very good neighborhood too.
