Cameta Camera has some good pricing on certified Nikon refurbs cameras and lenses. A d3400 or d5300 are great starters

My advice, don't buy anything without going to a store, handling a few and figuring out what you like, build quality and features.

I bought a Nikon D5300 inline sight unseen and was shocked at the poor build quality compared to me Pentax cameras which are much better quality. I sold my Nikon after a couple of months.

Many DSLR photographers are going to Mega zoom cameras. The Panasonic FZ 300, 1000, 2000, the Sony RX10 III, etc. You don't have to lug all the lens around, and these cameras take excellent photos and videos. Someone else has already suggested browsing DPreview. Look up these cameras and check the forums. I haven't picked up my DSLR since I started using the Panasonic FZ cameras 4 years ago.

The Canons are usually decent value for money.

Would a refurb Nikon D7200 for $620 (body only) be too good of a deal to pass up?

Don't do it. The reason the 7000 series is above the 5000 series is because of extra buttons and water resistance ( not proof). I'd get a 5300 over the 7200.

That is if course you actually don't need the water resistance. I personally don't.

Got mine off eBay new for 400 with the kit lens

There are a few other differences but I personally don't think they are worth 300 more LINK

Cannon is doing a crazy good deal for Fathers Day on the T6.

$399 with code DADT6 on their website gets you:

EOS T6 camera with the 55mm kit lens + 300mm lens + bag + sdcard

You can get a Nikon D3400 for that price. Better photo quality than the Canon

The auto focus on the 7000 series is light years ahead of the 5000 series. If you shoot in low light, or shoot sports get a 7100 or 7200

The Pentax K-70 is a much better camera than a 5300 or 5500 and roughly the same price

My next camera will by the fujifilm x-t20. If price is a concern, look at their x-t10.

All of their lenses are top notch including kit lenses, if mirrorless is something you want. It's the wave of the future

Mirrorless cameras are pretty awesome. All the advantages of interchangeable lenses on a much smaller camera. I just bought an Olympus Pen-F. It weighs under two pounds with a 14-150 mm lens.

They are incredible if you shoot in Raw.

Sony has quite a few lenses for its system plus you can use adapters for some other non Sony lenses
