Google with a potentially serious privacy concern with their Dot competitor...

Well...Google seems to have stepped in it with their answer to the Alexa Dot competitor. Designed to compete with Amazon’s voice automated virtual assistant speaker that has proven wildly popular, it was just announced last week...and won’t ship until a week from today. But they’ve already disabled one feature that may create issues for those with privacy concerns when it comes to these devices...
Yikes.
Hmmmmm. Not a good start for GOOG here...
Wait...holdup. Huh? What a bargain! For the same low low price of a more versatile, established platform that leverages the world’s dominant, clear cut leader in Cloud Computing, you can get a less versatile device that has already had key aspects of its funtctionality disabled due to a glaring privacy concern unearthed by a media member reviewing it?

Google is permanently disabling a feature on its new Home Mini smart speaker, which was announced last week and starts shipping next Thursday, after a reviewer discovered the device was quietly recording his conversations without his knowledge or consent.
Yikes.

People act like they’re all the same, but business models matter. Google and Facebook’s core business makes it beneficial for them to know as much about you as possible. I’m not saying Apple and Amazon won’t ever mishandle or misuse the data they have on us, but their core business is to get us deeper into their ecosystem so their products sell themselves to us without needing to get in our heads.

They issued a bios update that completely disabled the button, so it won't happen again. However:
This is actually the nail in the coffin for me. Not worth it if I can't connect it to my Bluetooth speakers
ETA: it has now been shown later in this thread that yours article is full of shite, so please ignore the last part, I am back on the "will buy" train

Im getting one for free with my pixel 2xl purchase but i've been wondering where im even going to put it. I think i've settled on daughters room because she has an iphone so she can speak to the google home mini to control the HA in her room.
Google already has an echo dot competitor, it's called every phone that has google assistant on it.
But certainly agree this is a bad look. Can't believe they didn't find this glitch before it went to market.

Is this confirmed? That almost seems wrong.
eta: the specs on the google store website say it has wifi capability (obviously) as well as bluetooth.
Why wouldn't you be able to connect a speaker to it?

what a clickbait article
this was a a hardware issue with the unit.
if they really wanted to "spy" if could just record without any lights or any show any logs in your assistant activity page
not to mention, we all carry phones in our pockets with microphones that record everything we do already

I would imagine they will just fix the hardware issue and recall the already shipped units, which cant be many.
At least that's what i would do.

you can through chromecast or bluetooth
there is not a 3.5 mm headphone jack so cant connect to traditional speakers that way, youd need to get chromecast audio

right that's how my google home works. 3.5mm headjack is pretty pointless. I'm sure it would work for some but most people probably do not want to place their google home or google home mini within cord distance of the speaker their casting to.
So basically the article was incorrect.

googles response, it kinda sucks theyre removing the touch functions. could be used for an alarm
Agree it sucks but i never, never touch my google home. It's a nice feature to have and you would expect something brand new to work properly, but in the grand scheme of things its a rarely used feature.

Wired speakers way outnumber wireless speakers in people's homes. I think there are a lot of people who would see a dot/mini as a cheap path to make their old dumb speakers smart speakers. Now that old CD player stereo system can be given new life as a streaming music player. Considering Google is trying to play catch up in this space, they really shouldn't be doing things that limit their appeal.

it still can. with chromecast audio
once again, they removed the headphone jack because thats the "trendy" thing to do

I don't want to sound rude but what you are describing is what the chromecast audio has been doing for awhile now.
I have wired speakers and i connect my google home to them because i already owned a chromecast audio.

Good point. Google and Facebook are basically data miners using your personal information for their own business purposes. They also have a political agenda that I don't care for. I avoid both as much as possible but Google in particular is so ubiquitous that it's darn near impossible stay beyond their grasp.
