Google releasing RCS in the US

Big news for messaging in the US. Google announced today that they will be releasing their universal profile RCS to all US Google messages users. Hopefully with the recent announcement from the big 4 carriers, and this today, text messaging will be moving to the 21st century

I've been excited for this, but it seems kind of useless if everyone has to use the same app...which seems to be the case in the short term at least. Might as well use WhatsApp or Telegram.

Well the big benefit is that it falls back to regular mms/sms for contacts that do not have RCS.
Also, rumors are that Google and Samsung will be connecting hubs so that will cover the vast majority of Android users
And of course, at some point the carrier solution will be coming out, and they are pushing for apple to have RCS fallback in their app which will greatly improve cross platform messaging

Yes, an Android-only app created by a consortium of the four U.S. carriers will surely be a good app, and will surely succeed worldwide.

Definitely a step in the right direction but until someone can find a way to force Apple to incorporate this, it won't be enough to say text messaging moved to the 21st century.
As an iOS user I love iMessage and all but it's frustrating that Apple hasn't sat at the table with everyone else to ensure interoperability between users text/media messaging.

I never said it would be a good app. But if it uses universal profile RCS and gets apple on board (both have been stated in everything they have released, including the release a couple days ago by the company building the system) then that is a wonderful thing for everyone.
Certainly much better than hoping that suddenly a vast majority of US users will spontaneously switch to whatsapp

If I remember correct, apple has been at every gsma conference on RCS. I think it is inevitable that they will support it, the question is how long until

That's news to me but if that's true, that's very good news indeed. I've been on iOS since before Android existed and have been working hard to remove any hard dependencies on the iOS/macOS ecosystem so I can switch around platforms at will, and iMessage is basically the last hangup I have at this point.

This is great news. I already use that app because of the web interface. An upgrade to RCS is very welcome. I hope Apple gets on board to interop so videos dont get compressed to hell. I hate that I have to send videos to my wife via FB Messenger

If you’re not familiar with all the ins and outs of RCS, let’s quickly catch up. There are four critical problems with RCS:
1.Not enough carriers have adopted it
2.Those that have adopted it sometimes did so without adhering to the international standard for interoperability called the “Universal Profile”
3.It is not end-to-end encrypted, so it’s easy for governments to demand the contents of text messages sent using it
4.Apple has had precisely zero to say about it, which everybody has interpreted as code for “lol we have iMessage good luck with that RCS thing bye!”

I can't find an attendance list, but there are a ton of articles from MWC18 where there was a slide stating Apple and Gsma were in talks to have RCS included in iOS. The slides from this year haven't been published yet

quote:Google's release today is different than the one announced by the carriers. This is built into Google's Messages app, so no new app needed. I believe it's just going to route texts through Google's RCS server whenever possible, similar to the way iMessage works. I see no way that this can fail to achieve widespread adoption by Android users.

Which is exactly why the carriers actually commiting to support RCS is so important. They have more power to get apple to integrate RCS than Google or the GSMA.
However, according to the GSMA, and the two companies involved in building the carrier RCS solution, they are in discussion with Apple
Also, I don't know why you are so against RCS, but to take anything but positivity from the recent developments is just ignorant. We should all be hoping for a better messaging experience, and since iMessage will never come to Android, and we will continue to rely on stock messaging apps, RCS is really the only hope for any improvement.
By all means though, go ahead and tell me how terrible this is all going to be haha

Send her the google photos link.
A couple months ago, XDA said that a messaging feature was coming directly to Google photos which should make sharing easier. Not that it is hard now, but I am amazed by how many people don't know how to share in the app

I know how to share in app. We share entire albums in Google Photos. I know how to send her a link.
I shouldn't have to.
If I'm texting her I should be able to send her a video of our son being goofy without having to use another app just like iPhone to iPhone users.
I'm hoping that this RCS adoption makes it so Android to Android texting is smoother and then Apple adapts and we all are happy texters

RCS is the wrong path. It is a corporate takeover of messaging. We will regret it if we allow RCS to succeed.

RCS is just a protocol standard, like SMS. Implemented correctly, it should be carrier-agnostic, device-agnostic, OS-agnostic, and app-agnostic. It is the exact opposite of "corporate takeover".
How do you think messaging should work? And who should operate the servers?

Sorry, wasn't trying to say you didn't know. I agree, I hope this improves media messaging on Android, and ultimately cross platform.
