Google Home has the best reviews. I have 4 of them scattered throughout my house.

Google is going to win the AI game. Alexa may be a bit more useful for the time being. But Google Home has come a long way since launch and I'm confident your Google Home will serve you better in the long haul.

Alexa, for the simple fact that "Alexa" as a wake word is WAY better than "OK, Google". I never used any of Google's voice stuff on my Androids for exactly that reason. It's too goddamned awkward a phrase.
Amazon's integration with other smart home things and the huge hooks into Amazon Prime seems to be more polished than what Google offers, but Google's ability to understand what you are asking in natural language is better because of their AI. Google may end up having the better product once their integration catches up, but they will NEVER have the integration with any Amazon product or service, and Amazon's leads in the market may make it the defacto standard and every other device an also-ran. We're going to have to wait and see.
If you decide on the Echos, here's the skinny: They all have the same networking, control ability, integration, Alexa, etc, but each level adds a single new feature. Consider Echo Dot the baseline. It just has a tweeter for sound, but it will do everything you need it to and it's plenty loud, though with no bass response. The Echo adds a small subwoofer in addition to the tweeter. That's it. The Echo Plus adds a home automation hub and slightly upgrades the tweeter. That's it. I'm ignoring the Echo Spot and Echo Show for our purposes because those are more specialty items.
Now I, personally, wouldn't get the Plus, ever. As it stands, I think third party home automation hubs are superior to anything anyone has baked in and Alexa already integrates so well with them that I don't see any benefit from having the hub inside the Echo case. That leaves the Echo and the Echo Dot. If you aren't planning to listen to music through your device, don't waste money on the Echo and just get an Echo Dot. If, on the other hand, you plan on listening to music through the device, then you want the Echo.
I personally have three Echo Dots for rooms where I won't need to listen to music through them (kitchen, living room, guest room) and one Echo for my master bath where I use it to listen to music, news, etc., as I'm getting ready in the morning.
Whatever you pick, good luck and enjoy it. They're all pretty slick devices.

Not sure if you are aware, but you say "hey Google" to the Google homes, and you can also change that on your phone. They have also been saying that they are going to allow custom wake words soon.
We have 2 home minis, I don't use them a whole lot, but my son loves talking to it to play music or calling santa around Christmas. We just got a free month of YouTube premium so we are able to use voice to play any song now.

Google has better voice recognition, is more accurate and understands multiple people. I can say" hey Google play my thumbs up playlist " and it plays my play list and not my wife's.
If she gives the same command it will play her playlist and not mine. Alexa didn't recognize different people's voices when I had it and the overall voice recognition was not near as Google's.

Amazon added multiple user recognition in October.

Unless you are tied into the amazon eco system there isnt much of a reason to not choose the Google Home/mini line.
It's superior tech. No one in the tech industry even debates it either.
However, if you use Amazon Music you'd be better off suited getting an echo/dot.

I would bet they release something like it come October when they launch all their new hardware and Pixel 3 phones.
