My wife's cousin has a bachelor's in marketing and wants to change fields. She's looking into the Google data analytics certification.

I work in IT and think it's sort of worthless. I told her to just learn everything online and put her stuff on GitHub but she's not interested in that.

She's smart and could probably get some kind of low end data analysis job. Does anybody think that the Google certificate is worth something or if you're a hiring manager that you would considered a positive? She's motivated and so but socially awkward. She's good at math and science so she already has the capability to do the work.

I feel if I say too much I'm just going to be mocking what she thinks is important.

Does Amazon have a similar certification? If so, I would lean toward Amazon.

Well, it's not a programming or infrastructure cert.

That's more for a business analyst role, a semi-IT position typically in non-IT departments, working with developers to accumulate data in things like Power BI.

Honestly though, I doubt that it will do more than meet some artificial HR requirement.

There are actual legit courses in it too, from places like MIT and Harvard, if she wants the paper to prove it.

That certification would not move the needle for me as a hiring manager. Your recommendation to build a public portfolio would get more traction I believe.

that's overkill. Whether she has that or not, her first job is going to be a junior analyst position. Having that would not get her a job as an intermediate analyst, people want experience. Just tell her to get some SQL and excel certs and look for an entry level marketing data analyst role.

If she wants to move up faster after a few years, she can get some beefier certs down the road, but she needs a foot in the door for them to mean anything
