Alright I searched and the last thread was from a couple of years ago, but Arduino seemed to have some interest on this board. I just ordered my first kit to play around.

Anyone care to share their projects/ideas? I'm an excited nerd right now

I have a couple Arduinos but haven't really gotten around to any projects with them. I have a few Raspberry Pis that I have put to use though. I have one at home recording security footage, and one at work that I used to make a wireless bridge to a CNC machine. I'm also trying to put together a day/night security camera with another one.

I've really been wanting to get into automation with arduinos/etc., but I think I've been afraid that once I start I won't stop, and it will consume all of my time and money.

A few projects that I have in mind:

Automate my window blinds.

Automate most of my lighting.

Automate the bathroom vent with humidity sensor.

Build an underseat toilet vent (the gas has to pass right by your face on its way to the ceiling vent frick that)

A water meter monitor.

Might update with more later.

I don't have a garage door sensor, so I'm thinking of making one of those to tell me if my dumbass left it open or not and hook it up to a wifi to send me an email/text.

you know you can buy a vent unit that does this already for under $100.

I'm aware, and there are also humidity sensor wall switches that work with any existing vent that are even cheaper.

But what fun is that?

i'm all for a smart house (obviously; i'm at 200+ doodads now) but some things i cant justify adding to central control. dehumidifying my bathrooms is just too boring for me to care about beyond having a unit that turns itself on/off.

There are tons of sites with project ideas. It's really limited to your imagination and skill set. Check out instructables.com and they have really good step-by-step projects with pictures for lots of things. Not just arduino.

I think I've decided to go with an addressable LED light strip under the cabinets in my kitchen. Sounds fun and useful. If anyone has experience with this please feel free to learn me on any mistakes you made.

Dont use a cheap Chinese knock off from Ebay for the strips/power supply.

I had one under my kitchen cabinets and it burned my apartment down.

I've seen them used to control blast gates inside dust control piping in wood shops. If you have a line run to each tool that generates wood dust, and have a blast gate inside at the tool, to get maximum performance, you only want to have the blast gate open at the tool you are working at, and all others closed. The arduino can coordinate all of that.

I just bought this Arduino kit. I'm interested in learning to code a bit, and it seems like the Arduino IDE is not too difficult to get started with.

My wife and I are also planning to start working with our 6 yr old on coding. We're thinking that if we can connect the idea of writing an instruction on a computer with an interesting observable action (light blinking, fan turning, sound coming from a speaker, etc), then it might help.
