Pipe diameter is a constant.
I don't know much about engineering but is max flow rate a constant even under different pressure?
Calculating the movement of water under the sensor is the tricky thing to me.
If a smart faucet can reliably deliver precisely 1 cup of water every time there must be a simple sensor somewhere.
I'm overthinking this for sure but the movement of water through the pipe is what I don't get. How can an external sensor get that data unless it's "stealing" it from the existing meter somehow.

Pretty sure it picks up signals from the meter, it's not measuring the water flow itself.
quote:
When water flows through a household water meter, a magnetic disc spins inside of the meter, which correlates directly to a water flow rate. The Flume sensor measures the magnetic field from the meter and sends the information to an app via a Flume bridge

What kork said. You strap it around the meter not the water flow. It's probably measuring a pulse signal or spinning wheel inside the meter using magnetics.

GREAT time to have one of these

Anyone know if Jefferson Parish has a rebate or something available for installing one of these? If so, google is not being very forthcoming.
Either way, looks like something I need to add to Home Assistant system.

i just ordered one
ETA: i probably should have gone to look at my meter first but off well.

quote:Absolutely! Really easy to justify the cost after all this.

quote:I doubt it, but you'll have to call to see. And you'll probably have to speak with several different people. And if the answer is 'no' every time, I would ask to be put on a list for potential rebates in the future.

These things could save so much trouble, money, and heartache.

Another interesting data point....my flume stopped working the other day. I went outside and looked and it had obviously been moved. My assumption is that the meter reader didn't know what it was and removed it to look and then did a half arse job of putting it back.
I had to re-calibrate it to get it working again.

Did the app notify you that something might be wrong, or did you just happen to notice?

Does BR water have a rebate for this?
Posted on 2/18/21 at 10:39 pm to Korkstand
No notification. It was still reporting usage at a rate of like 3 gallons per hour.

That sucks. Maybe they will add a tamper alarm to version 3.

The city has remote reading electronics on the new meters they are installing in Dallas, mainly so they can lay off meter readers. I hope they eventually allow us lowly citizens to have access to the real time data they are producing.

quote:So I did live without it for another day, many days in fact. I did get one last year though and thought I'd bump to report my first notification and to check on everyone else.
I don't think I can live without this for another day.
I got an alert about a potential leak the other day, so I hurried home to check on it. Turns out my wife left the tub faucet trickling because we have a cat that likes to sit in there and play with it and drink from it. She normally just lets it run while she's getting ready in the morning, but she forgot to turn it off.

Anyway, false alarm but at least I know it works pretty well. If it were an actual leak that could cause damage, it would have been the difference between a 10 gallon mess and a 100 gallon mess. For $200 I don't think you can beat that peace of mind.
