As the title states, I plan to purchase my first 4K budget TV by the end of the month. I do not want to spend more than $600, but I am willing to spend a couple hundred more if anyone suggests any good TVs not listed in this post.

I am not interested in a TV larger than 50". I do not play video games at all. My main want and reason for purchasing a new TV is to have a better picture. I watch normal TV shows, college football and basketball, and motocross/supercross.

I went to Best Buy last weekend to look at a few different models on display. I went specifically to look at the Hisense 50" (model 50H8C). I also wanted to see the TCL 49" (model 49S405). The TCL was displayed on a rack away from the wall. I didn't spend much time at all looking at the TCL because I was more focused on the wall displayed TVs. I looked at the Hisense for maybe 30 seconds before a few other TVs caught my eye and impressed me more than the Hisense. These TVs being Vizio M series (M50-E1), a Sony 49x720e, and a Sony 49x800e. I spent the most time looking at the Vizio M series TV. I thought it looked the best of all the TVs I listed, but the Best Buy employee kept steering me in the direction of the Sony units. The Sony units may look better because, like I said, I spent by far the most time looking at the Vizio unit. I am going to go back to Best Buy this weekend and spend more time looking at the Hisense and Sony TVs. Can anyone here tell me how the Hisense, Sony, and Vizio TVs compare to each other? Reviews are good for the Vizio. I have read numerous review sites calling it the most bang for your buck budget 4K TV.

What about the Samsung 49" 7000 and 8000 series? The 8000 series Samsung price is definitely on the upper, upper end of what I am willing to spend for my first 4K TV.

I appreciate any and all advice and suggestions.

Thank you.

Let's not get carried away, it was their best on a budget.

I prefer the Vizio M series at the $600 for 50" range.

Will a 4k tv improve the picture quality of this programming if it's still aired in 1080i/p?

Asking because i don't know

Yes, if it has a decent upscaler.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have researched the TCL P series. Unfortunately, it's only available in 55". It would hands down be my choice if available as a 49"/50". I am putting the TV in my bedroom. 55" is too damn big for a bedroom TV in my opinion, 50" is pushing it. Not many choices in the 43".

It is very clear they are talking about people on a budget that don't want to pay extra for higher performance.

Wirecutter

Try using rtings where there is less subjective opinion and more actual measurements.

As to the 1080 on 4k displays question it depends on a couple of things. The quality of the upscaling and the bandwidth of the 1080 signal. Most of the upscalers do a solid job with high quality 1080i or 1080p signals, 1080p Bluray almost always looks excellent but 1080i channels on cable or satellite that have been significantly compressed often can look worse on a 4K display. This is the same issue displays dealt with 15 or so years ago when the majority of content was still 480i.

After spending 80 hours testing new models for 2017, we found that the 55-inch TCL 55P607 is the best 4K TV if you’re on a budget. Not only that, but it’s also our pick for the best TV, period

The 4K isn’t gonna make that huge of a difference for that size unless you’re very close to the tv. Not saying don’t get one, just don’t expect it to be some huge upgrade in quality
