Firestick buffers a lot. Is Roku the solution?

My primary residence has Dish.
I’m currently using a 4k Firestick in a 2nd home, so we’re using the Dish Anywhere app to watch the same Dish content. I use the ESPN app to catch all the LSU games that stream through SEC+.
The problem I’m having is sometimes the audio gets mis-aligned with video when watching Dish programming and sometimes it freezes. When I watch games through ESPN app, it’s not as obvious when audio and video become unsynchronized , but I’ll often see a pop-up message indicating that it is buffering. So even though the Dish app may suck, there’s a nuisance when I’m not using the Dish app.
I’m paying for 50 mbps through Cox. My Speedtest app shows I’m getting 60 mbps download but only 3-3.5 upload.
Is the problem likely my upload speed (less than 10% of my download)? Or is the problem likely my Firestick? Would switching to Roku improve my viewing experience?

Your download speed shouldn't be that bad. Get that looked at or something.

Go to speedtest.net and click go.
After it is finished click the share button and paste the url for your results or the image.
The share button is above the ping for me.

Good catch. Just corrected it

I would if it didn’t also show my location, local network name, and internal/external IP address.
No thanks FBI. You’ll have to work harder to work that warrant for my arrest. I have 6 months till the statute of limitations runs out. Not going to let my guard down now.
I just want to watch LSU games from my cabin in the woods without buffering. So the corrected upload and download speeds in my OP will have to suffice.

Oh, I didn't think it showed all that when you submit the picture.
Where in this picture is my local network name, internal/external IP address? I am failing to see it. Do you mean my service provider? Either way I don't see any other information. I still respect your privacy and understand your hesitation.
Glad you realized it was backwards. If reversed then that download speed is fine.
I have excellent internet and a tremendous router and firesticks still gave me issues. I got a roku ultra renewed and never have an issue. Do you have to have a stick or does you setup allow room for more of a box type of streaming device?

quote:Yeah, overall I think Roku is a smoother experience than Fire TV devices, but either way you go I think the boxes are faster and more stable than the sticks. I have several roku sticks around the house, and after a while they just seem to go bad. They start disconnecting from wifi, streams start buffering. Reboot fixes for a while but it always comes back, so I just get a new stick. I had a roku box years back and never had a single problem with it, it just got old.

That's exactly how I feel. I really try to avoid the sticks of any brand.
This is what I bought.
roku ultra It's not as expensive as the other streaming devices, but it's still better than the sticks.
I like the Roku app for the phone that you can you use to control it too. This helps for when I lose the remote. I'm sure they all have similar apps. I just prefer the roku interface, but we all have our preferences.

If the ESPN app is giving you issues you could also try loading youtube and searching for "cajunomics" I casts the games there, so look for whatever video is currently live. It's worth at least testing to see if you youtube works more smoothly than the ESPN app. I don't go live until 5-10 minutes before each game though.
Just suggesting this until you can find a fix for your buffering issues.

Your picture is different from my picture. When I clicked share and posted, then previewed, I saw the data elements I described.

I can do box. I’ll probably get a Roku box for my other tv (have 2 side by sides for a sports bar environment) and do a live comparison .
Thanks for the suggestion.

You're welcome. I hope that works well for you. Good-luck.

Roku is the best streaming option out there IMO. I only have cable on one TV and we stream with Roku on all the others, live TV is almost always flawless and when it is not I don't ever suspect the Roku. We are getting 200mbps to 500mbps depending on where the TV is located so that might help things. It is still much smoother than my kids fire TV.

I find the boxes to buffer less but thats just my experience
