Fired DirectTV

Have been a DirectTV customer for 14 years and it’s too expensive and I don’t watch 99% of channels. They told me to pound sand today when I tried to decrease my bill so I’m done with them.
If I want to watch Golf Channel, ESPN, CBS, NBC, and ABC....what should my setup be? Most of this is Greek to me.
Appreciate the help.

If you're not wanting to go to a regular cable provider, get a streaming box/stick and a streaming cable service like
Sling
PlayStation Vue
DirecTV Now
Hulu Live
YouTube Live
They all have slightly different prices, channel lineups and pros and cons. So you really need do some research to see which one fits you best.

quote:These you can get over the air for free with an antenna. Not sure if people realize that these days.
CBS, NBC, and ABC
Golf and ESPN you can get on pretty much any streaming TV service... Sling, Hulu TV, Vue, Youtube TV, etc. You just need a streaming device (FireTV, Roku) then sign up for one of these services and give it a whirl. Free trials plus no contracts means it's pretty much risk-free as far as finding which one suits you.

An antenna can't record. Any stream app should at least have the major networks on demand to be worth it to anyone.

I have YouTube TV and get all of that but NBC which I get with an antenna. $35 per month

And YouTube TV has NBC on demand. It's a good choice, it just doesn't have a lot of channels.

I had SlingTV for a few years and Vue for a little while and I like YouTube so far. It has what I need and a solid On demand selection.

I'm currently doing trials on all 5. Started with YouTube. Now on PS Vue. I hate PS Vue.
Using roku.

I wasn't a huge fan either. I haven't tried Hulu or Direct TV Now but I might one day. Them all being month to month makes it easy. I'm using Roku too.

Antenna with a Tablo can record and give you a "Cable" feel with a 2 week guide. I enjoyed your definitive statement when there are a dozen options that's been out there for years to rebuttal your confident stance.

I highly recommend Hulu Live - I believe it is about $40/month and also gives you access to their streaming service.
Cutting the cord was the best thing I ever did.

This is a good site to see what channels you like and what is the best price. Choose the channels on the left and it automatically updates the service provider that has the best price.

You’re not anyone. Most regulars on this board are far from being anyone. My wife is closer to anyone and she hates this fragmented new world where you have to use multiple different apps to watch the same content that used to be available in one interface. I’m even starting to find it tedious. Inconsistencies in the PSVue DVR forcing you to first notice something isn’t available when it should be and then know what episodes you’ve watched as you go back and forth between Vue and the network’s app.

I’ve been looking for a website like that for my whole life.. thank you very much
I have a question about slingtv: would I need three subscriptions to watch it on three different TVs in my house at the same time?

It depends. Sling Orange alone ($20 per month) only allows one stream but has espn. Sling Blue ($25) has more channels but no espn or Disney and you can watch on 3 TVs at the same time. Get both for $40 and you get espn and Disney and the 3 streams.

quote:Yeah, I realize it's not ideal, and I have always felt that we are in a sort of "phase one" of the cord -> streaming transition. It would have been impossible to get every provider and content owner to switch over to a new delivery system and interface at once, so for now at least we have a jumbled mess of sources and interfaces for our content. But at least we have choices! I don't know if my desired "phase two" will ever happen, but we have to try to force the industry away from the bundle model and even the channel model, and demand access to individual shows. We sort of have this now considering you can buy individual episodes/seasons of shows on Amazon/Google/etc., but the prices are absurd. These options are clearly priced as a filler service so as not to compete with traditional subscription revenue. I'd love to see these options priced as if they were the primary source of the content, and (very long shot here) I'd like to see the content liberated from the service you buy it from.

We need to be able to buy and/or subscribe to ONLY the content we want, and we need to be able to consume it with our choice of interface.
I pretty much have this now with Plex, though of course I have to acquire some content via "illegitimate" sources, but I justify this to myself by paying for a streaming service where the content is available. I don't like app-hopping either.

The easiest place to start for a new cord cutter is:
1. Roku + a good HDTV Antenna
2. Chromecast + a good HDTV antenna
3. Apple TV + a good HDTV Antenna
There are other more complicated solutions as well depending on what you wany to do.

Directv is an absolute joke. Rates are uungodly high. But the worst part is customer service.
Over the summer we had a problem with our TV, basically weren't getting anything on the TV. I called, and they told me to climb on the roof and play with the dish. After I got done laughing I asked if they could send somebody out to help us. We agreed on 4-6 on friday. I said great.
I waited around for that entire time period, and at 7:30 when no one had arrived I called to ask what the deal was. The lady (Generous term) asked if I could reschedule for Monday at 2. I was supposed to take the LSAT during that time and I told her that 2 would not work. She responded with "well now it's your fault that you don't have TV." So now the fact that their guy doesn't show up at the scheduled time it's my fault? What other life events am I supposed to miss to fix an issue they caused?
One more for you, last week we tried to cancel our NFL Sunday Ticket. My friend had to spend 3 hours on the phone to get them to take a service away. It likely involved 2-3 clicks of the mouse, yet we had to go through 1 incompetent person after another to get it done. Nothing short of incredible. Also, anytime it rains, which is the best time to watch TV, you can't watch it... But other than that, how was the play MRS. Lincoln?

I use Slingtv and an HD antenna. I get everything I need with it. I tried Hulu for a free trial and hated it. I’ve got a friend with DirecTV Now and it doesn’t seem bad. Pretty comparable to Sling.
