eSIM and International Roaming

I have a Galaxy S20 with AT&T and traveling using a data only eSIM. I have to turn on international roaming for the eSIM to work. From my understanding the North American Galaxy models do not allow you to choose different settings for each SIM. So I can't turn international roaming off for my regular SIM and leave it on for my eSIM.
It seems that I need my regular SIM on in order to use RCS messaging.
If I turn on international roaming and leave my regular SIM on (so i can RCS message) but set the eSIM as primary, will I still incur international charges from AT&T?
Or is my only option to keep the regular SIM turned off and just message over whatsapp

Might be best just to use whatsapp. RCS is carrier dependent and I am under the impression that lots of international carriers have been slow to adopt RCS.

I've used 2 sims before in my pixel. IIRC you can turn data off on your main SIM and just have data on through your eSIM.
You might have to still turn on ATT's international day pass on your account for your calls/text to work via your main SIM. It's like ~$12/day unlimited use if you use your phone for calls/text/data and they cap it at 10 days/per billing period. So, after 10 days its free. Hardly worth it to mess with local SIMs at that pricing IMO.

Yeah I think RCS still routes through carrier like SMS so there wouldn’t be a workaround for RCS using a different data source.
