Hi all,

Looking for some suggestions for someone wanting to get an “entry level” camera. Not sure if that’s the correct phrasing, but would be using it to take pictures of their kids. I’m willing to spend a few hundred bucks. What’s a good set up? Or should I be prepared to spend more? Thanks.

I think what you're looking for is a "point and shoot." Optical adjustable lens, compact, inexpensive. This category has thinned out an absolute ton in the last 15 years.

Something like this? Price escalates very, very fast after this kind of point and shoot.

Maybe something a little above that basic level? Not sure if that makes sense. Seeing a lot about mirrorless cameras. The cannon R50 pops up quite a bit. Out of my depth here to be honest.

Before we can answer the question, what is your REAL budget?

Good question, should’ve provided that. No more than a thousand. Would LIKE to stay in the 700-800 range if possible.

If that's the range a used mirrorless camera from either Cannon, Nikon or Sony. You'll have go a few generations back, but you'll be surprised how much better pictures it takes compared to a cell phone.

R50
DO NOT BUY.

I performed extensive testing. This sensor is not very good. You would not like it

An R10, however? Absolutely.

I got a new Nikon D7500 for $600 last Father’s Day. It’s a great entry level option these days. (Was a mid range back in the day)

That’s without, any lenses of course.
I’d by a new camera but buy used lenses. Lots of people dumping DSLRs for mirror less. Great deals to be had.

R50 and R10 share the same sensor.

Apologies. I was mistaken as the 50 made me think of the 50mp 5DSR, which was a crappy sensor with a crappy processor.
