Ecobee 3 or 4?

Which Ecobee should I get?

3 lite and however many sensors you want. The Alexa stuff in 4 isn’t worth it.

4 if you want Alexa, but I think buying a separate dot would be better.

Everything I've read says this. The Alexa implementation has some limitations over a Dot and the difference in cost from the 4 to the 3 can get you a Dot or two if they're still on sale.

I should have gotten Ecobee over Honeywell. There's no difference in Summer but for winter I had to get creative.
2nd floor thermostat is on the second floor landing. If all the room doors are closed the heat from bottom floor gets trapped up there, so the 2nd floor heat doesn't turn on causing the rooms to freeze. I had to figure out setting the first flow low enough at night that the 2nd floor thermostat triggers and heats the rooms just right.
Goofy but "works". Anyone with similar layout be on notice.

I would go with the ecobee3. As of last weekend Costco had them in the store for 199 with three sensors included.

Lite doesn't support HRVs, ventilators, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, etc. Otherwise not much. I like the build quality of the lite a little better than my 3.

I have the same setup, but a slightly different problem. The door to the walk-in attic is at the top of the stairs, right next to the thermostat. So cold air from the attic seeps out making that area a good 5-10 degrees cooler than the bedrooms in the winter and 5-10 degrees warmer in the summer. I've tried weather seal on that door, replaced the door, and a threshold all to no avail.
Sounds like I should get the Ecobee to put the sensors in the bedrooms.

If you already have Alexa, then ecobee 3 might be better. I think it is the only edge Ecobee4 got over the Ecobee3.
