Eatel - Cutting the cord - Technical questions

We have made the call to cut the TV service from Eatel. Eatel told me to bring back all their equipment, including the router, which controls the TV. $205 a month is a bit much considering we don't use the TV service that much.
I know I have to buy my own router, but will I have to get a modem as well? I will be making a trip to best buy for an additional Roku box and a router today, and want to be sure I have everything I need before turning in my Eatel equipment.
Also, would 75mbs down be enough for up to 3 streams running at once? Playstation Vue for TV and Netflix / Prime for other viewing. For $11 more a month I can up it to 150 mbs down.
TIA

75 is fine. do you have a data cap? find out what that is..you'll burn through a 1TB data cap faster than you think.
you typically need both a modem and a router. do not get the all-in-one units. they suck and limit what you can do.
buy your modem..do NOT rent from eatel. find out what they support (probably docsis 3.1 but 3.0 will be more than fine too) and go hit amazon or ebay to find a good deal. its a modem. either it works or it doesn't. once you plug it in and confirm its doing its job, you likely will never notice it again.
as for the router; this is where you have to think things through. i would consider looking at one of the mesh systems as they are going to be better long-term and provide better signal coverage throughout your house.

are fibre "modems" available ?

Depends on what type of internet service you're getting. Cutting Eatel cable doesn't mean that you're also cutting their internet. If you are keeping their internet service you only need a router. If you are switching to cox, for instance, you will also need a modem.

oh i have no idea. is that what eatel is?
for google fiber here the 'connector/modem' is about the size of a D-cell battery.

most places I know, it is..

All I know is my ATT goes from fibre to Rj45 inside a little box in my garage..From there, it goes to their modem..I've honestly never looked to see if I can buy an equivalent one, they don't charge me for theirs

75 is more than enough for your needs.
With Eatel, you only need a router. You do not need a modem. the cat5 line will run from your wall straight into the router.

sweet. wish i could get fiber
to the OP, yes..focus all efforts on a robust router/wifi mesh system.

what do they do differently than ATT in this regard..I've honestly never thought about it, but my FiL does only have a router at his house plugged into the Eatel line that comes from outside

I got rid of Eatel cable 2+ years ago. Bumped up my speed from 50 to 100 and bought this router and it's been great.
Eatel has since bumped up speeds across the board so I get 150 for the price I was paying for 100

No data cap from Eatel, keeping their internet service, but they want the router back.

I already have Wi-Fi extenders to get from one end of the house to another. have had no problems since installing them. Can watch Netflix and stream twitch at the same time in the room farthest from the router now. Mesh is a future investment already on my horizon though.

Not sure exactly, but they invested a lot of money running fiber lines throughout all of Ascension back in the early to mid 2000's. It's nice.

Also a great thing. I moved and almost switched to a new provider. But the fact that we stream everything kept me with Eatel. No data cap and top notch customer service is a huge plus.

Yep. Current Bill: $205.
New bill with PS vue on top of internet: $120
Already pay for Netflix and amazon so not factoring those in.
The savings will pay for the new additional roku box and router in 2-3 months.

I did the same thing back then except went the FireTV route.

No, Eatel will provide you with a cat-5 ethernet handoff. They will have a Calix ONT (Optical Network Terminal) on the outside of your house that will convert the fiber to copper to hand off to your router.

Yes. Even 4k streaming content is compressed enough that 75Mbps should be more than sufficient.

See above. I'm not sure why you'd need a modem on AT&T's fiber. You probably don't, or they just standardized putting in a router as a company decision. Alternatively, they could be using indoor ONTs. I'm not sure how AT&T does it.

I'll honestly look when I get home...I know the modem has a WAN and ONT port but only one is in use

Its in the ONT port for ATT

I have Eatel and cut cable. Fiber runs to outside your house then should drop in somewhere. I connect the input Ethernet into the router then run 3 Ethernet lines to outlets for hardware setup. Everything else is Wi-Fi. I have 75 down and have 5 tablets running, three fire TVs and don’t usually have problems. Only time is if I’m downloading a large file to the PS4 and set it as priority over the rest. I went with this router. TP-Link Archer AC2300 Smart WiFi
I can control connections and time limits for the kids from an app.

Yep, sounds like an indoor ONT. They are the future.
