Does this mean my neighborhood is getting hyper-gig internet Fiber now ? (2 Gbps & 5 Gbps)

Curious if anyone knows. Doubt it but at least I tried. I did email them but they could not tell me :( We already have normal Fiber I guess you could call it. 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps (1000Mbps) tiers currently.
No I doubt I will get the higher 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps tier but nice to know the option is there for the future or if the price goes down for those tiers.

Sounds like they are providing fiber to people who don't yet have it. If you already have fiber to your home, there would be no need to run it again. Fiber is fiber and the speed only depends on what equipment they have running it on their end (like switches, etc). Some network equipment can carry higher speeds than others and none of that would require digging or boring, etc.

Na, i think they have to replace other infrastructure equipment, not run new fiber cables. Zero construction here, they just sent me an email saying 2 and 5 were available. Not worth the 2,000/year and crapload i'd spend on networking equipment to get the 5g for me.

I have 2GB only to lock shite in. As our homes become more and more smart, data is king.

What it probably means is AT&T is gonna be cutting cables, drilling/digging thru sewer lines etc. AT&T came into our association and tore up some cable lines, sewer lines and even hit a water main.
Best of luck to you.
It's like they don't know how to call and get the lines marked...or they just "Use the Force".

Looks like it went down, our Fiber, but hoping it means upgraded speeds soon.

Smart move. Video demand is driving this, for sure, as well as thecapabilities of mobile devices and networks. Fiber intermediaries are now really important, where they build out capabilities in spaces under- or unserved and sell capacity to ISPs and carriers.
Compression techniques are pretty much tapped out at this point, with only incremental improvements achieved with each revision of the standards. As we move to 4k and beyond, it’s going to be raw throughput that counts, particularly when every device no matter how small can now stream high definition content. Home security camera providers will up their frame rates and ratchet up their resolution significantly increasing the amount data going back the other way.
I’ve had AT&T fiber since 2016. I’ve seen notifications in my area that they’re adding multi-gig tiers, but when I check my house, I’m at the top available for me (1Gbps). I will go to 2Gbps when it’s available in my neighborhood, but I can’t see going to 5Gbps.
We have four heavy streamers at home including me, and ultra power user. Thus far, 1Gbps has been more than sufficient.

I only reason I would get 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps is to have a safety net!

Can’t believe they are still speeding up internet speed with the porn addiction epidemic in our society

Need it for pandemic so everyone can Zoom and Teams from home.

Google just dropped fiber in our neighborhood, which means they (well technically their contractor) blocked off roads for days at a time, tore up the street and barely patched it and dug up everyone's yards for the connection boxes in the middle of winter when nobody's grass will grow....

Must be nice. I live out in the country and can only get 25 mbps.

I got an email about the 2 and 5 gig yesterday. I can't imagine needing this, all of our TVs, multiple computers, tablets, smart home stuff and we never have a single hiccup with 1gig.
