Seems like last year or sometime ago I was reading that components were now prohibitively expensive for building your own

Video Cards have always been, and will continue to be expensive. Other than that. I never found any other components are overly expensive.

I would have one at home, if I had the space to put it. I don't have it, so It sitting in my closet at work, unused.

Supposedly the built in graphics on the new AMD processors are really good. Considering I don’t game, I’m sure they’d be good enough for me.

I think I could build a good desktop for $600 if I stick my current monitor and buy a Ryzen processor for about $100. Motherboard $100. Case $60. 16gb RAM $150. SSD $150.
What am I missing?

You can't beat a Surface Pro 4. Very convenient and all the power you need.

Like others, I have a desktop I purpose built for gaming. I also use it when I work from home via VDI.

Thinkpad X1 for my work laptop. Usually keep it at work but I'll bring it home if I know I'm working from home for a couple days or more. Microshaft's Direct Access is nice.

iPad for bathroom reading, shitposting to tSECRant during games, etc.

Asus zenbook for traveling.
