Turned on my computer today and some sites are unreachable. Looks like my dns setting changed from automatic to 8.8.8.8. Tried to ping that and some of the unreachable sites with no success. Also tried ipconfig release/renew. Only other option I see online is to disable my antivirus. Any other ideas?

8.8.8.8 is a public server owned by Google... My private DNS servers use 8.8.8.8 to resolve domains outside of my private zones. It should resolve queries for any domain.

Can you share some examples of domains that you are having trouble resolving?

Was gonna ask if you’d tried running Malwarebytes or anything to see if there was anything possibly affecting your dns...can you access the inaccessible sites via IP to verify it’s DNS related?

I'm back now after power cycling the router and modem. I had just done the modem earlier.

I could not ping 8.8.8.8 or tigerdroppings. Oddly enough I still can't ping tigerdroppings but I'm here anyway.

I don't think tigerdroppings.com responds to ping.

I've seen random strange behaviors related to ipv6 lately. This may have been one of those cases. If it happens again, in a command prompt, try an ipconfig /all and check if the primary DNS has an ipv6 address.

Often I'll just disable ipv6 outright.

I have the DNS resolution errors every morning when trying to connect with my VPN, I just switch back and forth between my home wireless networks and eventually it works. I don't have the ability to turn off IPV6 with my Airport Extreme at this time.
