I am trying to decide between Ring and Google Nest to completely overhaul my home security (cameras/alarms/etc). My google nest security system switched offline and I haven't been able to get it up and running again so it has me exploring my options...

I have a mixed bag of items from both companies at the moment:

Google Nest security hub and motion sensors
Ring outdoor spotlight camera
2 Ring indoor cameras (don't use them now, but potentially will)
2 Google nest hubs

Does anyone here have an all Ring or all Google set up? Pros and cons for either?

I have ring alarm system and it's been awesome. Had the older version at another house. Cheap monthly. Nothing ever went wrong with it. Costco has the starter kits usually.

I’ve had both. Since Google bought Nest a few years ago decided to do all Google at new house since I liked the Nest thermostats. They both do the same thing. The Ring cameras on the outdoor spot lights were fun cause you could talk through them and set off sirens.

Spend your time learning about Home Assistant so you never have to have this conversation again and be worried about platform lock in ever again.

Once you get home assistant going you can get whatever the hell you want.

I’ve got all kinds of Nest stuff with Ring Flood light camera with a UniFi cameras all integrated.

If my Nest Secure Alarm triggers all my ring cameras sirens go off and lights flash.

My Lutron lights all strobe flash, and all my TVs and nest hubs play sirens and creepy sounds.

I can arm and disarm my alarm system with a hidden lutron Pico remote.

Bottom line is Home assistant is worth the initial time investment to have the most compatible modular smart home possible.

I just want something that turns my lights red, turns spotify on and starts playing Welcome To The Jungle at the loudest volume when someone breaks in. It would also be cool if it would start my Roomba to attack the intruder.

Wife and I had a good laugh over that.

and now I'm going to implement the Welcome to the Jungle thing and have my Roborock come on and start cleaning if the alarm goes off. The power of home assistant.

Then I'll be coming down the hall with some .223 flying at them.

I watched a little youtube and looks like it can be quite interesting.

I think i know the answer already, but can you set up if 2 devices leave the home...for the doors to lock and alarm set? Some of the geofencing features will notify me asking if I want to set the alarm/lock doors, but my wife is usually home so no I don't want to do that. But I would like if we both leave for the evening that it automatically locks up for us.

Looks like you can probably set something up like that in the Node RED add-on

I don't know if 3rd party devices are allowed to set/unset any commercial alarms, but you can absolutely use multiple devices as triggers for an automation.

Yes you can absolutely use the mobile apps for geo fencing and triggering automation, scripts, scenes etc

Literally can be as insanely complex or simple as you want. It's literally just if and then statements. They have GUI script tools or you can literally just open a YAML config file and manually write it. You can import scripts from community. You can sink hours into getting stuff just right and those horror stories do exist. BUT mine has also been left alone and chugging along with zero issues for months and I don't tinker with it at all. Every once in a while I get to feeling frisky and go hard for a few weeks adding new stuff.

My last project was this: We used to have play a 10 hour white noise youtube video on a nest hub our baby's room everynight. Knocks him out, but after 10 hours some random crap would play and wake him up. Whatever the youtube algothrim deemed. Mickey Mouse fun house 4 am wake up? sure. You could try youtube playlist, all kinds of crap but it was unstable and had lots of issues. timing out, crashing etc.

Eventually I downloaded the 10 hour file direct from youtube using Newpipe. I then put that file as a media file on home assistant. I then put a Lutron Pico remote on the wall in his room. The trigger is pressing the pico remote button, which then triggers home assistant to play the media file to the Nest Hub locally. I also created a toggle on my home assistant app where one button push restarts the file from the start. Now when it's over it's just silent, and restarting it involves no casting, no internet, just open home assistant and press button. Boom 10 more hours.

A little note. I did have an issue integrating my Nest Secure System with Home Assistant directly.

However when I set Home Assistant as an Apple Homekit controller, then linked a Starling Home Hub I was able to get complete Nest guard integration.

This was almost a year ago so it may be more straight forward now, but it was the only way to get security system control from Nest to Home Assistant. Nest > Starling Hub > Homekit controller/Home assistant. I use android and it works fine, although we have a ton of apple crap around the house as homekit hubs so that works without an issue.

Whereas Ring can just directly integrate.

Long term I was to get a Konnected board and integrate it in the existing wired system my home had installed when I moved in by previous owners.

However for now, Nest Guard secure or whatever the hell it's called works totally fine.

The Apple watch and WearOS apps are freaking life savers. Being able to disarm you security system first thing in the morning as you are groggy and need to open a door that is no where near the keypad and you don't have your phone on you?

Cool just open the app on your watch and bam, security system off.

Don't know where you garage door opener is, or in a different car? Can't dig your phone out of your pocket? Just tap the garage open action on your watch.

The possiblities are truly endless.

You could set an automation that makes your Google Hubs broadcast a warning to your dogs who hate the vaccuum that broadcast when you start the roomba.

"ALERT EVACUATE THE AREA OF ALL K9S, LOUD DEATH MACHINE INCOMING."

You can then feed all your items back into Google and Alex for home voice control as normal.
