I was super disappointed that the pinball machines didn't ship this year but these 2 videos are really encouraging.

Star Wars pinball in action
Marvel pinball in action

for $550 i'm 100% STILL IN! haven't seen the invaders from mars previewed yet so i'm not ready to make a decision on which one to buy.

as for my DIY arcade, i've gone down the retropie rabbit hole waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. i think i bit off more than i can chew but i'm starting to finally understand how retropie, emulation station, retroarch and the emulators all work together. its a bit of a mess still and i'm surprised there's not a more cohesive integration between all these.

anyway i digress; talked my next door neighbor into buying a 1up and helped him mod it and he was so happy he got me a pi4 with a heat sync & fan kit so i'm going to upgrade my exist pi2 cabinet and have been going down multiple rabbit holes getting everything set up and working.

anyone else still working on a custom arcade cabinet? you going with a PC or pi?

Partially unrelated to your post about DIY arcades, but you need to get over and check out Game Terminal off of Foster Ave. All the cabinet games are F2P and there are like 100 pinball machines. I stopped by there a couple weeks ago and it's legit af.

Yeah. It's in a very odd location, but it's pretty awesome. Kid-friendly up until a certain time at night, too.

Definitely will start those projects after moving into my new house with a game room. Questions for you will be plentiful!

I am torn between the at games legend pinball and the arcade1up.

Both have pros and cons and I think I'm going to need to see them in person to make a decision.

I’m interested in the A1up pinball but have a hard time justifying it to myself at full price after I scored 5 cabinets for pretty cheap. I got myself an M93p tiny and was going to see if I could run Sega Model 3 on it (doubtful) but the pandemic has slowed everything down for me on that front. I’m an ER doc and I’ve been just exhausted between work and childcare (toddler at home). I bought a LaunchBox license on Black Friday when it was discounted and want to try it out but it might not be until February that I get any time. So essentially almost a year since I’ve done much with my arcades.

I did get a digital marquee for my TMNT mod and followed a tutorial to add a raspberry pi 0 to put the corresponding marquee up with whatever game is selected. However, I need to go in and rename all of the marquee files I have to match the rom file names. I also read about multimon to have it all go off of the one raspberry pi 4 but haven’t delved too deep.

One neat thing I did was, using a design by u/legochuck on Reddit, I modified his 3d model and outfitted my mod to be able to switch between a 4 way and 8 way joystick from the top. I was gonna fine tune it and load it to thingiverse but, you know, pandemic.

Thank you for starting the original thread since it got me interested in all this stuff in the first place.

I need this! Do you have the thread handy?

I was up all night last night ssh into my pi to modify a virtualman image to my 5:4 Dell monitor.

Also disappointed how much manual work there is to locate and properly size background art, etc.

One I have a solid set of ROMs, bezels, background art, samples and marquees I'm going to be very happy.

If you want something done right..

Eta I'm at the point now where I can guide anyone through this now. There's no A-Z guide anywhere just bits and pieces so if anyone gets frustrated ping me.

I'm still trying to turn my Marvel Super Heroes Arcade1up cab into a MAME machine...football season slowed this to a complete stop though. I'm using a PC (not raspberry pi), but I'm also trying to filter the MAME roms to stuff that I want to play. SOOOO, I'm going through every rom from the 50 gig of roms and such that I have...I need to get back on this, think I'm halfway through. Sloooooow process, but I hope it'll be worth it in the end!

Sorry, this is not pinball related...kinda hijacked a bit here. I am curious about those as well though!

Legochuck’s thread

My thread

I actually also followed u/madmexicano’s thread and hooked my stock volume switch to a mini amplifier chip, a PAM 8803, and back to the stock speakers. This allows me to control the volume with the stock switch.

I also used the IcculusPlan for using the stock on/off switch to power on/off the raspberry pi.

Oh, I forgot to explain why I had to modify legochuck’s design. He glued the “key” down to make it work. His hardware must also be slightly different than mine because the throw on the joystick wasn’t quite far enough for me, so I had to widen the gate a bit. I added a cap that fit on the key and has a little protrusion that fits into the flathead groove on the base of the stick so that I wouldn’t have to glue it. Printing it in pla was too brittle but petg works great.

thats insane. i thought i was pretty OCD about reading every single post that comes in on the 1up sub but i completely missed this when you posted it.

i dont have a 3D printer but given the popularity of 1ups and modding i can't believe someone hasn't come up with a solution for the 4way/8way issue. i am using thumb screws to make pulling my panel off easier to get to the gate but i feel like a neanderthal compared to what you've done.

1up should be shot for releasing the burger time cab with an 8-way because of the other games.

i saw the 2 threads about the elegant 'power down' and using stock volume control but was too lazy to implement either of them.

now that i'm moving to a pi4 and larger screen after doing my 'test run' with a pi2 i'd like to make the whole cabinet more robust.

So someone did come up with an elegant but not necessarily visually pleasing solution:

Restrictor insert

You’d have to switch it out when you wanted to change it. I suppose the dust cover can still sit on top of these and they can be made to have a really low profile.

That subreddit was great with all sorts of new ideas, but I haven’t seen anything really innovative for about half a year.

Regarding Burgertime, someone posted this:
quote:

Burgertime is a bit of an outlier. Even with a proper 4-way stick, the controls are still very dodgy. It has terrible collision detection, and extremely tight directional allowance. Great game Idea, but Deco clearly made it hard as balls for more quarters.

i do remember being extremely frustrated at 'dead' spaces where i expected to whip around a corner in burgertime and being PISSED when he just stopped and waited for the eggs to catch him while i furiously worked the stick. if the BT guy kept moving like pacman this wouldn't be an issue if you didn't change direction at the exact microsecond.

i wonder if someone ever created a cheat that made 90 degree turns less infuriating. i assume with an 8 way stick you might as well gouge your eyes out.

that wouldn't work for me since i put loctite on my joystick balls. got frustrated with them constantly unscrewing. a collar with a tiny set screw could have solved this.

i much prefer what you came up with and i did lol at the guy who did it via servo and added light up buttons on the CP showing which mode the joystick was in

Yeah, burger time is a bit infuriating. Before I started playing it again, I thought to myself, it should be a piece of cake now that I’m an adult. Nope, there’s a reason those bastards always got me back in the day, and still do today.

I forgot to mention, I bought an MKII control panel off someone for $10, and then he’s like, “you want the monitor, too? I was just gonna toss it.” He says it didn’t work but he never fiddled with it. So that monitor has the pcb in the back, too. So, one day, I’ll check and see if the thing works, but otherwise, I plan to mod that control deck with a trackball and do a vertical screen mod, probably with my Pac Man machine. I just don’t know which trackball to get.

I am also waiting on some Sinden lightguns with recoil. If you’re not familiar with them, they are compatible with lcd screens by putting a white border around the edge of the screen that the guns essentially use for calibration.

I have a 7 year old that I would love to build a arcade machine for. Any good beginner resources I should be looking at or recommendations on where to start?

Christmas is over so make frequent trips to Walmart looking for close out acrade1up cabinets.

I paid $75 ea for the 3 I bought but even at $200 it's a steal.

The 2 player units like marvel or mortal combat are the easiest to turn into multicades since they already have holes for 12 buttons and 2 joysticks.

As for modding it, there are guides on reddit that show you what you need to buy (budget roughly $125-$150) which includes everything you need.

Pop by here before you order anything and we'll make sure you're ordering the right stuff. It's all at Amazon so worst case scenario you have to send some things back and order something different. No big deal there. The reddit guides are so-so but they don't always keep up with newer/better components.

I've helped 4 neighbors go through this process so I've gotten it down to a science. every middle aged dude who grew up in the 80s wants one of these.

Finally if you don't have a Linux box at home you at least need a pc with an sd card reader and 1tb free space so you can download a few different image files to try out as your arcade content. That's the fun part.

It's actually really easy to do as long as you have everything you need when you get started.

Thank you. I’m in the process of remodeling a house I’ve purchased so I’m sure it will be slow going but I know it’s something we will both enjoy whenever we can get a machine built.

you done done it now a-aron.

there are guides (particularly on reddit) but it depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.

you primarily looking for console gaming? classic arcade gaming?

you're best served with an old PC or raspberry pi then hit me up as to where to get the game library.

usually the 'pre packaged' ones on amazon suck and there's 33,000 games that you've never heard of and you would never want to play.

in hindsight i'd probably go pc vs raspberry pi because i've found the linux 'club' to be very snobby and you have to crawl and beg for information to get that maddeningly frustrating system beaten into submission.

xmen is a great cab to use since it already has 6 buttons and a joystick for 2 players.

think of what games you REALLY want on there. in particular you'll need to think through if it uses special hardware like a spinner or trackball and take that into account if you need to modify your control deck.

in short, nothing is plug-and-play to get that 1up cab going but its not overly complicated to make the changes you need but you will have to do some legwork to make it happen. plenty of guides online and i'm happy to help.

i currently have 2 1up cabs and a legends pinball. the 1 cabinet i've done the most work to includes a digital marquee as well as a pi and assorted crap like computer speakers, a 20" monitor and other controllers to get the most out of it.

if you can find a cheap legends machine (maybe at sams?) that is a better initial platform to mod for arcade because its larger & already includes spinners and trackballs and the 'coinops' path to add your own games to it is much simpler than the retro pi stuff i used.

I like the X-men, Street Fighter, NFL Blitz, NBA Jam

I don't need 33000 games, too many options
