I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop and want to disable the touchpad. I have searched extensively and it seems like a very simple question with a very simple answer, but for some reason I can't find it. What's the secret?

Can you disable in device manager?

If you go to Windows/Settings and search for touchpad. The result will take you to Bluetooth & Devices /Touchpad. The settings are there. You can disable it completely or by unchecking the box below, the mouse will be disabled when a mouse is present.

The laptops I have owned had a key specifically to enable/disable the touchpad on the very 1st row of the keyboard. The current Chromebook I have has it. So did my Toshiba laptop pc.

Check out the weird symbols in the middle of that row of keys.

(The Toshiba actually had a little white light on the corner of the touchpad that would be an on/off indicator)

I thank everyone for the responses, but there is no option to disable the touchpad in the settings. Under Bluetooth and devices > Touchpad I have these options only:

Gestures and interaction > touchpad sensitivity

Related Settings > Mouse Properties

Related support > opening the on-screen touchpad / Fixing touchpad problems

Touchpad is not listed as a mouse device that I can tell. I also examined the keyboard settings and don't see any reference to the touchpad there. ? Is it possible this machine was specifically configured to prevent the user from disabling the touchpad ?

That was my thought as well. Usually somewhere in the bios is a setting to enable/disable things like trackpads, USB ports, audio chips, etc.

Windows, might have the trackpad labeled as an HID (human interface device.)

Press the fn key then whatever f key has a picture of a f’d up looking window like symbol.

Perm disable, f2 into the bios on boot and turn it off. Or find it in device manager and right click and click disable.
