I called ATT a couple months back about removing some thing from my bill, and one was a $7/mo genie box that we never used in a guest bedroom. The person helping me mentioned that if I ever wanted to watch TV in there without a box, I could stream my DirecTV service to up to 5 TVs through Roku (or other). So I'm setting up a TV now, download the ATT TV app on Roku, type my login credentials, and it is telling me to "Sign in with ATT TV Now credentials". I don't have ATT TV Now credentials - any clue what I may be doing wrong or if the ATT person led me astray?

Very easy

1. Cancel Directv
2. Sign up with Hulu or YoutubeTV
3. Buy Roku and lug into tv
4. Watch tv on Roku

There is no DirecTV roku app. I think the best you could do with roku/directv is to use the directv mobile app on a tablet or phone and then cast the stream to the roku.

But I'm paying just about the same for no sports delay and a lot more channels

The day DTV doesn't keep giving me the massive discounts every year when I call is the day I switch to Youtube TV. Until then, it makes no sense to do so.

Well be prepared. I was a DirecTV customer for 10+ years and this year was the first year that when my discounts expired they had no new discounts to offer. The same thing then also happened to my parents and my in-laws. This was over last fall and this winter. Maybe now they have resumed discounts again but I have moved on.

I've been in the "call annually and request to cancel DTV and get the big discount" camp for a few years. Like most, sports have been one of the things holding me back. The other is having a single source for most programming, which is easier for my non-techie wife to handle. The streaming TV platforms, as expected, have inched closer in price so it's not nearly the $ savings it used to be.

But the day is clearly coming when it's about to all fall apart - and for me it's because content is leaving broadcast TV. Scripted shows are moving en masse to streaming. Regular broadcast TV is increasingly the home of cheap "reality" shows, news/talk and some sitcoms. I saw where CBS is moving some more of its scripts shows like Seal Team over to Paramount+. I don't like the fragmentation of 5-10 different streaming services with different interfaces and features but that's where I think I'll be in a year or two at the most.

Yeah it's been heading this way for a while. I understand it from their point of view, they have control over the content, viewing experience, profits, etc., but they have to see how awful it is for consumers.

I doubt it will ever happen (legally), but for me the ideal experience would be if I could choose the interface that I like and choose the channels/shows that I like and subscribe to them. I don't mind paying for dozens of different subscriptions, just let me use something like Plex where I can put in my credentials and your content gets added to my interface instead of having to switch apps all the time. But that would require a million business deals so it'll never happen.

I guess pirating will just have to get so bad that it puts the squeeze on them like it did the music industry. Doesn't seem like they're doing too bad these days.

Right, exactly. Years ago Apple famously was working on an "aggregator" type service as their TV product but they could never get the various rights and business deals sorted out in a way everyone could agree to.

I can't even remember or keep track of which show is where sometimes. Have to use something like JustWatch to figure out where a show is. Of course that's a great tool to use anyway to find where a movie might be streaming free or at a good sale. Roku and other devices do have a search feature which can at least help, too.

I've been paying $66 for the Xtra package + $10 for sports for the past 2-3 years now. I have two $40 promos on my account that each last between 6 and 12 months. Once one is about to expire, I call in and they give it back to me. Been doing this for over 2 years now. Maybe you just spoke to someone having a bad day.

Nope. Even after it was cancelled customer retention called to get me back but couldn't offer any worthwhile discounts.

I was paying $50/month total for Choice Xtra for the last 8 years. The best they could do this year was $95/month.

EDIT: I'm paying $33/month now for all the sports I want so i'm doing better now anyway.

Its crazy that I am seeing that you cant use the Direct TV app on Roku. I use my xfinity app and it works great.

I'm a directv customer and this is my work around for using Roku on my bedroom tv with no directv box.

Just about every channel I watch has a streaming app for roku. Load discovery, espn, history, a&e ....... channel app on your roku. Login into each app using your directv login. Click watch live stream on whatever app your watching. I have about 25 channels on my roku/bedroom tv. The only apps not available are local channels and the weather channel.
