Which would be a better device for college?

Very generic question--
Assuming you have a ton of typing I'd say laptop. You can always get a tablet with a keyboard, like an iPad or a Surface. But you'll still be limited down the road if you need more advanced software for some class.

What's your budget? Surface Pro would give you best of both worlds

If it's in your budget Surface Pro 2 or 3 with at least 8 GB RAM. I have the Pro 2 and actually like the 16:9 view better than 3:2 but if you don't care about that then get the Pro 3. Pro 2 with 8 GB will obviously be cheaper than the Pro 3 model. The main noticeable difference between 2 and 3 will be resolution as the Pro 3 is higher. I'm okay with 1980x1080 so saving a little money getting the pro 2 would make sense. Don't get one with 4GB if you want to keep using it for 2+ years. Get Professional Office with OneNote and get really familiar with OneNote and you will absolutely love using your Pro. Every lecture can be recorded (video or audio) while you take notes (handwritten or typed) and you can scan any documents given to you directly into onenote. Onenote is also great for organizing all info for any research you do along your way. IMO this is THE device to get for any student or business professional that needs something with both functions (tablet and laptop).

Surface Pro 3
Note-taking is easy with OneNote and they're automatically saved to your online account. I don't even use pen and paper at the office anymore.
