Cell Phone number compromised

In the past I have received both local and long distance numbers from spammers. I usually try to send a text to that particular number informing them that their number has been compromised.
So today I received a call from a unknown number stating that they received a call from me today. So obviously my number has been hacked?
Should I contact my carrier? Verizon.

Tap the brakes. Calm down. Your phone number hasn't been "compromised" - it's been spoofed. They either reserve blocks of Skype (or other VOIP) numbers from your area code or spoof them. They know you're 10x or 100x more likely to answer an unknown number from your own area code.
They just want a pick up because so many pick ups = so many successful scams which ends up with so much money - at least until the scam runs stale.
They're probably using your number 100 times for every time you get notification about it. I wouldn't worry about it - it's a known thing and if you choose to change numbers every time it happens, you'll be changing numbers weekly if not daily.
Stay safe, bro.

Ok - I wasn’t going to change numbers. I was just curious if I should notify my carrier- that’s all I was asking.

There is a way for people to hack your cell phone number with bogus SIM cards, but if they do your phone will be disabled. So if your phone is still working, it hasn't been compromised just spoofed.
Google SIM card swap. They usually do it take over your social media accounts through 2-stage verification. Activate a phone with a SIM card tied to your number, try to log into account, forgot password link, new password sent to phone number now activated on their phone so you never see it, change password so you're locked out of account.

The problem is I’m in sales so anyone from a La based area code could call me. I have Verizon software that usually alerts me if it’s a telemarketing call etc. if I don’t answer it and someone calls but doesn’t leave a message. I might text them - if no reply I’ll then block the number.
It’s just a damn adjustment to the bs

Also never answer with your name "This is (insert your name). They can record that info and parlay that into other info.
I’ve also heard you shouldn’t say “Yes” or “Ok” on the line because it can be used in a recording to make it sound like you agreed to something.

Mine was spoofed a while back. Oddly, I only received about 3 return calls and then nothing after that.
All 3 thought I was calling about barbershop supplies or some nonsense like that.
