but but but..everyone on the board said 'no way any normal usage of the internet can come close to 1TB' a year ago.

Maybe some idiots said that. You know, the people who support what the current administration is doing in this regard.
Myself, though, I've always warned that those "high" data caps were just a preemptive measure put in place in preparation for the very near future. A sneaky way to get dummies to support their anti-consumer agenda.

we were mostly on the same page in that thread..i remember it was pretty epic because of the 20-something single guys who laughed at the idea anyone would need anywhere close to that amount of data and we should be thrilled at our quasi-governmental comcast overlords for such a generously high data cap.

some government regulation aka NN is good
See here's the problem. You simply cannot fathom how regulation can actually make a market freer. But it can, and does, and we have numerous examples of this fact around the world.
Problem is, some here in the US think we know what's best all the fricking time.

quote:Ah, so you're confusing the NN rules as implemented with NN principles themselves. Easy mistake to make.
who wrote the oabama era NN policy?? oh yeah, comcast lobbyists.
Do you at least see how data caps play into the actual NN principles, now?

what??
That's why Comcast was for NN being removed

i can see where you're going with this and i'll slightly concede the point but you have to admit its a bit of a stretch to make your case.

quote:Sure, but isn't it a virtue to recognize when you're not? It should be, but unfortunately some consider it a weakness to admit when we're wrong.

quote:I don't see it as a stretch at all. It's actually quite clear: data caps are a backdoor way for ISPs to tax the competition. It's an obvious way to limit competition from Netflix/Sling/Vue/etc without targeting/throttling them directly, claiming it as a blanket cap.
i can see where you're going with this and i'll slightly concede the point but you have to admit its a bit of a stretch to make your case.
And now you're crying about it, practically begging for some regulation. But instead of stepping back on your misguided principles, you resort to breaking the law via piracy as a result of this "free market" frickery.
And then you probably condemn to hell somebody who's eating dinner tonight on your tax dollars.

how does your view reconcile say the fact tmobile gives me unlimited video & audio streaming for my phone?
wouldn't that also be a 'negative' to NN?
why is that not seen as a positive for no NN? isnt that the market reacting and providing a better service than the competition for a better price?

Your data gets degraded after hitting around 12-20 GB by cell providers.
Or did you not read the fine print
Posted on 1/22/18 at 4:07 pm to CAD703X
quote:Mobile data is a slightly different animal due to legit bandwidth concerns, but YES, allowing some but not all data to bypass caps is a violation of NN, strictly speaking. And I have always been conflicted on this one because I believe Tmobile will allow any service to sign up for that program without a fee. It just needs to be clear that these services are degraded, if imperceptibly so.
how does your view reconcile say the fact tmobile gives me unlimited video & audio streaming for my phone?
quote:Because when it comes down to it, streaming video (and to a lesser extent audio) is THE reason there is a NN discussion at all at this point. And in the context of network management, downscaling video is a legit technique on today's mobile networks. IMO, Tmobile has handled giving consumers what they want (unlimited) in the most neutral way possible (allowing any service to sign up for the program for free). This being the most neutral way to handle a legit problem, any NN rules or lack thereof don't even come into play. They did the neutral thing regardless. How can it possibly be a positive for NO neutrality when they have acted as if they support the principles?
why is that not seen as a positive for no NN?

you didn't read the fine print, thanks for proving my point again.
If you are streaming video after usually 12-20GB the quality is forced dropped by your provider.
