I’m out working.

Wife is home with kids in the summer.

Can I measure How much Hulu/Netflix/disney/cable they are watching per day/week?

That’s what I’m saying. No one here wants to help this dude kill his family because they watch too much Netflix.

Nice try!

Kids have everything the need.

A pool in the yard
Toys to play with
Footballs/basketball/tennis

They don’t need anymore screen time.

Not hard to understand.

unlike you, I like to have knowledge BEFORE I talk to people.

It’s an old sales trick, son.

Sorry, dude, but you sound like a control freak. A normal person would just have a conversation with his w9fe - honey, I'd like to limit the kid's screen time to "x" hours per day/week. They have lots of toys, a pool, etc. What are you thoughts?

You want to catch her in a lie about the screen time and then pull the Perry Mason "gotcha" with your "knowledge".

Millennial Boy over there all “fight the power” n’ shite that he shat up a thread so quick after being triggered by his past.

Sorry, son. Caint help you with that last part.

What's up everyone's arse? Is there something about OP that I don't know? Seems like a simple question, and there could be lots of reasons to do something like this.

Maybe wife wants to track the kids' screen time instead of policing it herself? Maybe she wants to track her own? Maybe the kids have to do chores to earn screen time? Maybe the kids can make a competition for who can watch the least TV per week?

Who cares?

OP, the only way I know to do this is via Home Assistant. It will probably find your TV on its own (assuming it is on your network), then you just click a button to add it and HA will start tracking its status. It will keep a history of on/off/playing/paused/etc. You can then add the History Stats integration to make it calculate cumulative stats for whatever time periods you want.

Just don't pull a Chris Benoit.

Update for the haters in here:

I just added a TV stats card to my Home Assistant dashboard. It reports the total watch time in the living room for the past 24 hours and the past 7 days.

Now as a family we can monitor our screen time, and we can set goals for ourselves. Also, since it's in Home Assistant, I can have it change the color of some of my smart LEDs based on the watch time. If the time approaches the daily or weekly threshold, the lights will turn red to let us know that it's time to go outside or something.

Thanks for the idea, OP!

Why stop there?

Send the wife and kids out of town and have surveillance cameras installed to really make sure they aren't getting away with anything else while you're "out working"

To each his own.

My kids love this kind of thing. Numbers, facts, goals and progress indicators, etc. I don't even care how much they watch (and they are obsessed with stupid shite on youtube), but if I were to tell them to turn that shite off and do something constructive they would bitch and moan (they are 5 and 8). But if I tell them this is how much TV they've watched and it's too much, they would set their own goals and get excited about achieving them.

It drives me absolutely insane when they decide to be their own little people and don't do what I tell them, but I respect the strong will and desire to be independent. Especially when I figure out a way to guide them into channeling that into being productive, and monitoring and modifying their own behavior.

It's not an overbearing disciplinary thing. It's a situation of you don't know where you are unless you know where you've been. A simple way to measure your progress. A way to break bad habits while not eliminating the joy entirely. To gamify a little part of life and actually make it fun to do better.

That's my motivation and how it fits into my life, anyway.

I applaud your efforts.
Kids are watching too many screens way too much nowadays. My parents used to MAKE me go outside and play.
Now kids just get fat sitting in front of the tv all day.

Sounds like you need more discipline in the household.
