I understand that. I'm referring to watching on a different computer. My Plex server is upstairs but sometimes I stream to my office PC downstairs. Was wondering if I needed to use a specific web address to avoid using data.

as long as the source material is on your server and you're on the same network, no internet should be involved...I could absolutely be mistaken because chromecast has some weird shite that requires interwebs for some reason..

yea if you go to the top right and pull down your server list, you will see "Nearby" if it is on your network and you are only streaming via you LAN. if you see "Remote" you are pulling from a Remote network, therefore using your internet.
as far as chromecast, i have only used the original one but ir connects to your WLAN to connect to your devices. Then your device uses whatever to stream to it, whether it be internet or local data.
Speaking of, my fire stick outside is almost toast. i need a new streaming device for my outside tv that is prone to the elements. The stick lasted a good 3.5 years. the TV too and it only have a few lines. haha. the first lines came after the 2016 flood.

Thank you, that is what I was trying to figure out. I do see the Nearby next to the server name. Still getting this figured out day by day.

would definitely suck to rely on the internet while in your house to reach your local server

I know, but in the context of OP, he could have been looping out and then back in since he was worried about WAN Data

This is exactly what I was wanting to avoid. I had stumbled across some forums that talked about using an IP address when accessing the server from other PCs on the local network. Granted these comments were from a few years ago and I know how quickly things can change. I wanted to make sure I wasn't looping out and back in. Overall, I am definitely enjoying Plex WAY more that Kodi or Terrarium. Quality is way better and no more buffering or crashing in the middle of a show.

Not doing a thing to my router for Plex and I think it can be accessed even though sometimes it inexplicably tells me remote access is disabled
The best thing is being able to watch your local live TV anywhere in the world if you have an electronic device handy.
I actually like hd homerun app better for straight live TV than Plex. It's definitely smoother and faster if I'm just pulling up tv but it doesn't work over the web I don't think.
eta biggest 2 plex issue at the moment:
1. inability to watch live tv on chromecast device (considering throwing all mine out for this reason alone)
2. inability to 'cut in' on a DVR recording in progress
lack of a channel guide & other stuff is annoying, but those 2 items above are showstoppers :rimshot2:

I connect locally to my windows 10 PC via remote desktop and from the internet using team viewer because I didn't want to punch a hole in my firewall is.
I don't think either of these things has an impact on the Plex server

Came across this via my Google Now feed. Very interesting thread.
Didn't see this mentioned but I might have overlooked it. Plex does require an internet connection, at least if you run managed users. I have Plex Home with profiles set up for my kids. Any time you want to connect, you have to connect to the Plex site to sign in. Really pissed a lot of users off when they implemented it awhile back. Local auth should be re-implemented.
And just one question, I see the talk about torrents but no one mentions anything about Usenet for material.

I've never seen a need to pay for the ability to get content...plus, the shite I run across that people are looking for on usenet sites is.....................I've been involved in an employee being escorted out by the LSP....

I only use two or three public indexers for the material, and only the TV Shows and Movie categories. They filter out that sick crap for me. Together with Sonarr, CouchPotato, and SABnzbd, it works wonders.
I had a similar viewpoint to yours regarding payment. But when I was trying to figure out how to mask my activity so Cox doesn't flag me, it was pay for a decent VPN or get Usenet access. I pay $40/year for Usenet the same that I would pay for a VPN.

what information are you trying to hide from a hacker?
I setup vnc on my parents PC and by the time I had driven from Monroe home to Nashville hackers had completely compromised their computer to the point I had to even reflash the BIOS and reformat the hard drive.
Since then I'm very wary of what I allow into my home network.
