That right there makes me sad.

I am over in the Oak Hills area. I pay Cox $185 for 100/12, the 140 channel Contour package and a phone line that goes unused. Currently have cell service with ATT so I am hoping the $90/mo fee drops to $80/mo as I have heard other folks saying their cell plan gets a bundle discount.

Even if I have to pay $90 + fees, the additional cost for Hulu or YTV is still going to save me $30-$40 per month over what I am paying Cox. Plus no data cap!

What really gets me is there is one side of one street in the neighborhood that connects to the adjacent neighborhood. Those are the only houses in my neighborhood that can get fiber today. Everyone else is waiting for what I can only imagine is the backend work.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I am curious as to how long it takes AT&T to light up the fiber. The subcontractor came through early last month and tore up the yards in the neighborhood running fiber. I would have thought at least one AT&T van would have been seen working the area since then.

I like most people are waiting for fiber so I can ditch Cox.

One other question, I know my neighbor across the street got one of the in-ground boxes dropped in her backyard. On my side of the street, I have the green Cox tube and a neighbor behind me has the green AT&T cube but not the in-ground box. I looked at the neighbors on each side of our houses and they don't have one either. How many houses do one of those boxes support?

Thanks

Are you saying OpenVPN is not secure?

Have you thought about rolling your own OpenVPN server to connect to your parent's computer instead of VNC?

I had a similar VNC incident about 15 years ago. Luckily for me everything on that box was backed up to an external drive at the time.

Service I use offers 256-bit SSL encryption on all transfers. Haven't heard a peep from Cox in the past few years and have acquired quite a few movies that way.

I am sure someone somewhere could possibly break in a see the traffic, but in the meantime my Plex library will continue to grow.

I only use two or three public indexers for the material, and only the TV Shows and Movie categories. They filter out that sick crap for me. Together with Sonarr, CouchPotato, and SABnzbd, it works wonders.

I had a similar viewpoint to yours regarding payment. But when I was trying to figure out how to mask my activity so Cox doesn't flag me, it was pay for a decent VPN or get Usenet access. I pay $40/year for Usenet the same that I would pay for a VPN.

Came across this via my Google Now feed. Very interesting thread.

Didn't see this mentioned but I might have overlooked it. Plex does require an internet connection, at least if you run managed users. I have Plex Home with profiles set up for my kids. Any time you want to connect, you have to connect to the Plex site to sign in. Really pissed a lot of users off when they implemented it awhile back. Local auth should be re-implemented.

And just one question, I see the talk about torrents but no one mentions anything about Usenet for material.
