Don’t want someone to take out of trash and get my financial records.

pull hard drive, throw everything else in trash. drill 2-3 holes through hard drive (usually has some spots etched on outside)....then throw in trash

Tannerite and a large, fast rifle round.

If in Baton Rouge: CARC. They actually will break the stuff down and send stuff off for smelting or whatever.

Also, Best Buy does residential recycling and I think their stuff in BR ends up at CARC.

Erase the HD with Boot & Nuke then toss in the trash.
Or you can blast it with above mentioned D-BAN and then give it away.

Great advice. I've disposed of two computers, desk and laptop, by removing hd. The cheap Dell laptop had a very brittle disc and I tapped a few times with hammer and it disintegrated into hundreds of tiny glass type shards. The Dell desktop's disc much tougher, but I got two pair pliers, grabbed the disc and bent and twisted and folded several times. I've heard of using a blow torch as a good method.

The preferred IBM method (yep old guy / back in the day) is a sledge hammer and one hit through the HDA. If you don't know what the HDA is - just bash it really good all over. Sat through a high tech class to learn that. They claimed after numerous studies this was the most fool proof and effective procedure.
