My computer updated to windows 11 a while back and everything works except one expensive printing program I have. I looked into "dual boot" but it looks like I can either have 11 or 10 open but not both. Can I run a virtual machine on my laptop to run 10? I only print from the program, it just does custom ink channels for my printers.

Any suggestions on a program?

I mean proxmox is pretty easy to run windows 10, but if USB passthrough can be kind of a PITA if you don't have the printer on the network. You can always set your drive to a dual partition boot to manually select the boot device whenever your computer is booted

Or you can just reimage the drive to W10 and not even worry about upgrading to W11

Download VMware player. Probably the easiest to get set up and running for what you need.

I have to print via USB cable for the RIP software to work. No network printing... some people set up virtual machines to control their printers because most of them can only handle one printer per instance of being open and these print jobs can run hours off of the rolls.

I recently went back to Windows 10, and the machine seems snappier. Some of that might be from a fresh install, but Windows 11 could be one of the most bloated OSes I've ever seen since Windows ME.

VMWare lets you pass USB devices through to the VM. Under the devices menu in the menu bar there's a setting "Disconnect from Host" OR "Connect to guest". This is what you want to do to connect the USB printer to Win10 VM.

Should also ask, do you want the VM to auto start on host boot up or are you ok with manually starting it? Assuming since you need it to print only you are ok with manually running it when needed.

Just FYI, the word you're looking for is hypervisor. VMware player or VirtualBox would probably work fine for you.

If you have the "pro" edition of Windows 11 then you can just enable Hyper-V and use the gui.

Otherwise, VirtualBox or VMware Player will work just fine.

Unless hyper-V has been changed for Win11, it doesn't support passing USB devices from the host to the guest.

You can keep the printer on 11 usb and then create a printer share. So then 10 connects to it via the network share.

The most stable version of Unbuntu is usually the best bet for this.

VMWare Player is trash and really only useful for running Debian-based smaller frameworks. Most places just use it to securely stand up independent scanners or lightweight apps.

A workstation license will save you headaches in functionality in the later stages.

USB 3.0 is on most newer versions and should bypass this process, but VMware player usually has hyper v issues when it's installed.

What issues are you referring to with VMWare player and hyper-V issues? These are separate type 2 hypervisors. I wouldn't expect the OP to install a bare-metal hypervisor then redeploy his host OS as a VM.

When you run hyper-V as a program on a windows host, there is no way to pass a USB device to a running VM from what I have found. If you have a way, please share a link because I would like this functionality.
