Best camera for expecting mom

We are expecting our first baby in December. Wife wants a camera for her birthday. I am completely ignorant as to what a good camera is. Help.

Unless she plans on getting into photography, she will be able to take better pictures with a high end smartphone than with a point and shoot camera. So, I would say she doesn’t need a camera if she has a Galaxy, iPhone, or the like.

I agree with this completely.
However, when the other moms have a cannon rebel (or similar looking) long lense camera at their kids birthday party or sporting events, there becomes a "NEED" for a similar style camera. I have one as a result of this situations. The wife can barely figure out how to charge the battery and has no idea about any of the settings.

Yeah, a DSLR would be a horrible choice. They want something to capture moments with.

bullshite. A Nikon d3300 is stupid easy to use on its auto setting and the pictures are better than anything my S8 could produce.

I agree that the images won't be better from a phone than something like a D3300. However, a solid point and shoot would probably be easier to manage and haul around.

1) The S8 is a single lens camera, no? The Dual Lens cameras like the iPhone 7/8 Plus and the Galaxy Note 8 are supposed to give you DSLR-like Depth of Field. I've never used one so I can't confirm that personally, but it does appear to be the primary benefit of the dual lens setup.
2) I have a d5100 and I agree that in auto mode it takes way better pictures than I've taken with any other camera. However it is bulky and not always on me. Maybe it's the thing you take pictures of planned moments with like blowing out the candles at the birthday party, but you'd probably rather be taking video on your phone of that anyway.

a6000. a6500 if you've got the cash
they're mirrorless, so they can easily be held in one camera.
You can get one with kit lenses for $1000 for the a6000 and $1600 for the a6500.
I've got an a6500. It's amazing.

It does, but I think you'd struggle to do that with kids. I mean, I'm sure it can be and is done, but I'd have trouble keeping up if using a phone camera. Cameras are great on modern smart phones, but when kids are growing up fast and you don't want to miss something screwing around with the phone, I totally get it.
I think a DSLR is doable, because they're very close to foolproof on full auto. Of course, as you say, you have to be committed to taking it.
I had a D5100 I never used much, as well as a couple other Nikon bodies over the years. Now I've settled into a Fuji x100t and a smartphone combo. That's about as photographer as I want to be, and I can certainly sing the praises of Fuji for shots of kids. For portrait photography those cameras are immaculate and are absolutely within the reach of everyone. And it's easy to have on me.
But that's a lot of camera if you're not into photography. Most DSLRs are too, but you can get really good cameras for cheap (but again, they're a pain for the uncommitted to lug around). Another option would be a high end point and shoot (RX 100 line, Ricoh GR, etc.).

Get one of the Sony mirrorless options. That said, my Canon 80D allows me to connect to my phone and easily text/share photos. It's a cool feature that my family appreciates. I'm not sure if the Sony does the same thing.

Facebook compresses images to smartphone quality.
That's all the infomation you need to make an educated decision.

Go to Sam's and buy either a Nikon or Canon. Get one in a kit with multiple lenses. That's what we've got. We still break it out occasionally, and most every year we get some friends or family to take family pics for Christmas cards. If you're going to events like school shows, having a legit zoom will be much better than smartphone pictures. Sure, you can use it on Auto 95% of the time, but even a little internet research and some trial and error, you can get some awesome shots out of what is out there today.

I got my wife a Nikkon DSLR for her birthday for our 2nd baby. My wife took pics of the 1st baby every month for the first year. She was trying to do so with a Sony point & shoot at the time, and would always complain that it took too long between pictures. With the DSLR she'll be able to take a bunch of pics in a burst to get the perfect one.
Nikkon is the official camera of Disney World. If it's good enough for Disney, it's good enough for me (slight sarcasm).
