All I got from all that is you are going to wait until they hit the clearance shelf at Home Depot. There is so much wrong in your comments I'm going to assume you are trolling.

you deny a ring doorbell fulfills its promise unless you add their monthly subscription service?

you get no video recording capabilities if you don't subscribe to their monthly BS and at that point you've spent $200+ on a glorified intercom.

eta from their own website in their own words:

What will happen to my recordings if I don't subscribe?

If you do not subscribe to a Cloud Video Subscription Plan within the 30 day period you will still be able to receive calls and motion alerts from your Ring Video Doorbell. All videos will be erased and new videos will not be saved.

Well, in their defense, the vast majority of people would prefer to pay $30/year to store their videos in the cloud vs. buying and/or setting up the hardware to record locally and to view remotely.

I mean, I get it, I would rather store and handle my video myself too, but it's really, really hard to beat a few bucks a month.

Thing works great without the cloud service. In fact the ones I have given friends and family members have all been used without the storage. I wouldn't use a doorbell cam, webcam, net camera, or old phone for surveillance anyway.

plus not everyone is cheap so $30 a year isn't an issue.

$200 is a great price for a HD doorbell cam with motion activation and audio that sends push notification to your phone.

You don't have to tell me. Ive sold these, Skybell too, by cases to integrators. Im in the loop with bugs and fixes when they arise.

its true, but to advertise this as a 'video doorbell' when that functionality is effectively removed from the product without buying the monthly add-on is a bit dishonest.

It 100% works as a video doorbell without paying $30 a year.

thats really not my point. they could jack the price up on this at any time and suddenly your doorbell is way more expensive than the $200 initial outlay.

this crap isn't limited to just smart doorbells, i know the nestcam/dropcam is the same way and it really irks me with the nickel-and-dime shite.

does Ring offer a one-time price to avoid the monthly garbage? nope. they are banking on being able to change the fees at any time once they get a critical mass of customers hooked on the product.

i know you're going say 'well wink is also cloud-based' and you are absolutely right. so is honeywell and chamberlain. the difference is these products made it clear from the outset they would not charge a fee for their cloud-dependent components.

i wont argue this. its great for SOME PEOPLE for sure but i'm not interested until the current products get some competition in the form of NON-SUBSCIPRTION-FEE solutions.

It's called Skybell and if you would read my comments you would see where I prefer the Ring

Yup. They cost more and didn't live in the internet so no features like push notifications, the ability to be answer anywhere in the world. Plus motion. If you ever installed one they were way more of a pain an the arse than the Ring or Skybell

Another thread you have railroaded with you bullshite. I'm out.

That's cool and thanks to everybody for the feedback. My doorbell actually went out so I'm probably going to grab one of these as an upgrade replacement.
